Job description

Business Development Manager – Fleet Technology & Connected Vehicle Solutions

Read this bit first

We have re-written this because we were vague in our first advert, sorry for that.

We are not looking for a "close it and move on" salesperson.

We want someone hungry. Competitive, target-driven, genuinely happy when the commission lands — none of that is a problem here, it's the point.

What we want alongside it is someone who still owns the deal after the signature: who cares whether the install went in properly, whether the fleet manager actually knows how to use the platform, and whether that customer would put their name to us in twelve months' time — and whether they'd still be referring us month after month, even at month 30 and beyond.

What we've built over the last few years is a reputation with fleets who trust us to tell them the truth. That is the asset. Sell something a customer doesn't need and we lose it. Everything below assumes you already understand that.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who we are

Connected Vehicle Solutions Ltd is a South Yorkshire fleet technology business supplying connected vehicle solutions to fleets across the UK:

  • AI dashcams with driver monitoring
  • Specialist customer requirement solutions
  • Thatcham-accredited stolen vehicle recovery and immobilisation

All of it is delivered through DrivAIntel, our own platform — so we're not just reselling somebody else's box with somebody else's logo on the login screen. We control the product roadmap, we control the customer experience, and when a fleet manager asks for something we can actually do something about it.

The business is led by a Managing Director with 20+ years in this industry, previously at director level with some of the biggest names in the sector. You will not be explaining telematics to your own boss.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why this role exists

This is the first dedicated sales hire in the business. You're not slotting into a 10-person sales floor to fight over an inherited patch — you're the person we build the sales function around. The person who does this well, shapes how we sell, who we sell to, and what the team looks like when we hire behind them.

That comes with the obvious trade-off: no big-corporate safety net, no army of pre-sales support, and a fair amount of "I'll sort that myself." If that reads as a warning rather than an opportunity, this is the wrong role for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What you'll actually be doing
  • Owning new business across UK fleets — SME through to multi-site operators
  • Running the full cycle: prospecting, discovery, demo, proposal, close, and a clean handover into the support team for installation, training, support.
  • Generating your own pipeline. This is the honest bit: the odd appointment will come your way, but one or two a month is the realistic picture. The rest is on you — your prospecting, your network, your phone
  • Support with sitting with customers post-install to make sure the thing works and the renewal is never in doubt
  • Feeding what you hear in the field straight back into the product — because here, that actually changes something
  • Utilising the CRM so everyone has visibility of what's coming down the pipeline

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who we're looking for
  • Currently selling telematics, vehicle cameras, tracking or fleet technology. We're not looking for a general B2B closer who'll learn the sector. You should be able to walk into a transport office and talk credibly about why the solutions we supply benefit their business.
  • A provable track record. Not "consistently exceeded target" on a CV — actual numbers. Rankings, revenue figures. Be ready to evidence it.
  • A consultative approach. You qualify hard, you're happy to walk away from a bad fit, and you'd rather lose a deal than oversell one.
  • Full UK driving licence and your own vehicle (mileage paid).
  • Based within sensible reach of South Yorkshire — you'll be in the office a couple of days a week.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What tells us you're the right person:

You're currently doing well somewhere that isn't doing much for you in return. The target went up, the patch got carved, the promotion went to someone else, and the ideas you keep raising go nowhere. You want a business where the distance between "I think we should" and "right, do it" is one conversation.

What's on offer
  • Basic salary of £[TBN] depending on experience and evidenced performance
  • Uncapped commission — realistic Year 1 OTE around £[85,000+], with genuine headroom above it. The plan is deliberately simple; you'll be able to work out what a deal pays you before you've left the car park.
  • Hybrid working — circa 2 days in the office, the rest from home or in front of customers
  • A real title progression. This starts as Business Development Manager. Perform, and Head of Sales / Sales Director is not a vague someday — it's the plan, because someone will need to run the team we hire behind you.
  • Equity participation. For the right person we will put a share scheme in place, so that if and when the business is sold, you're rewarded for the value you helped create. We'll be straight with you about the mechanics of that at offer stage rather than waving it around now.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The person we're actually describing

You've been the top performer. More than once. You've had the plaque, the trip, the handshake at the January kick-off — and then the number went up again and nothing else changed. You've watched people who sell less than you get listened to more than you. You've sat in a pipeline review being asked to justify a deal you brought in single-handedly.

And somewhere in the back of your mind you've thought about doing it yourself. Your own company, your own name over the door, keeping what you earn instead of funding someone else's boardroom. Maybe you've priced it up. Maybe you've got a name picked out. What stops most people isn't ability — it's the mortgage, loans, credit card payments, the stress and the fact that going out alone means eighteen months of no income while you build something from nothing.

This is the version of that with the risk taken out.

You'd be walking into a business with the product already built, the platform already ours, the accreditations already in place and a reputation already earned — and you'd be the person who takes it from where it is now to what it becomes next. Not a cog in it. The reason for it.

Here's what we expect, and we'll say it plainly because you'll be doing the maths anyway: by month two you should be covering your own cost. If you're the person we're describing, you'll know by week three whether that's happening — and so will we. Hit that, and by month five or six of hitting targets we're recruiting the next salesperson. Reporting into you.

That's the honest offer. Not a title in eighteen months if the wind blows right. A team under you inside half a year, because you built the case for it yourself.

Applications without, industry experience, real numbers won't get a reply — not because we're difficult, but because we've told you exactly what we're screening on.
