Job summary

Network Rail in the United Kingdom is seeking a specialist to manage the Cramer system within the DDaT directorate. You will support 24/7 network management, integrate Alcatel FTN and Nortel GSM-R elements, and ensure reliable operation of critical telecoms and software processes across the national railway.

The role requires testing, fault finding, deployment of new equipment, and disaster recovery planning.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Cramer system management.
  • Experience in engineering software testing.
  • Practical experience of field engineering fault finding, resolution and planned maintenance activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 24/7 network management control of the Network Rail radio network.
  • Coordinate with Network Rail Project Commissioning Engineers to support integration of new system components.
  • Monitor and manage system performance through the Cramer platform and interfaces.
  • Identify system issues, mobilise resources, and lead fault-finding to resolution.
  • Support the System Design Authority in acceptance, regression, and validation testing of software releases and hardware upgrades.
  • Assist with implementation and commissioning of new equipment and technologies across the network.
  • Ensure asset databases are accurate and up to date.
  • Coordinate controlled release of system components for operational use and maintenance.
  • Serve as technical point of contact for Cramer circuit anomalies and performance issues.
  • Manage disaster recovery planning and response processes.
  • Initiate system recovery actions during service disruption or disaster events.

What does the average day look like?

By use of the OMC server interfaces, to bring under management both the Alcatel FTN the Nortel GSM-R radio network, integrating them into the design configurations as required. The work also involves testing of alarm functionality, and production of test certification documentation, resulting in a fully managed network being handed over into Network Rail in an operational state.

  1. To provide 24/7 network management control of the Network Rail radio network.
  2. Coordinate with Network Rail Project Commissioning Engineers to support the successful introduction and integration of new system components.
  3. Monitor and manage system performance through the Cramer platform and associated interfaces.
  4. Identify system issues, mobilise appropriate resources, and lead fault-finding activities through to system-level resolution.
  5. Support the System Design Authority in the acceptance, regression, and validation testing of software releases, patches, and related hardware upgrades.
  6. Assist with the implementation and commissioning of new equipment and technologies across the network.
  7. Ensure asset databases are accurate, up to date, and maintained in line with established standards.
  8. Coordinate the controlled release of system components for operational use and planned maintenance activities.
  9. Serve as the primary technical point of contact for queries relating to Cramer circuit anomalies and system performance issues.
  10. Manage and oversee processes required to support effective disaster recovery planning and response.
  11. Initiate and coordinate system recovery actions during service disruption or disaster recovery events.
  12. Monitor system capacity and utilisation, providing recommendations to optimise performance and resilience.
  13. Implement and oversee incident management processes to ensure timely resolution and minimal operational impact.
