Network Engineer - Physical Network Infrastructure

Job summary

TikTok is seeking a senior Network Engineer to design, build, operate and optimize its global network spanning backbone, data centers, public cloud and edge/CDN. The role requires hands-on experience with hyperscale data center networking and a strong command of MPLS, BGP, and IPv6.

You will collaborate with compute, storage, database and recommendation systems teams, liaise with vendors and ISPs, and participate in a global on-call rotation. Travel up to 30% may be required.

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DHCP, BGP, OSPF/IS-IS and MPLS in hyperscale data centers.
• Experience with SNMP, sFlow/netflow, and telemetry for network monitoring.
• Familiar with data center architecture such as CLOS.
• Hands-on with major vendors (Cisco, Arista, Juniper, H3C, Huawei).
• Excellent communication and teamwork; participates in global on-call rotation.
• In-depth knowledge of MPLS traffic engineering (Segment Routing, RSVP, LDP).
• In-depth knowledge of cloud architectures (AWS, GCP, Azure, AliCloud, OCI).
• Familiar with Broadcom/Barefoot switch/router chipsets.
• Knowledge of IPv6 and IPv4-IPv6 coexistence.
• Programming/scripting in Python or similar.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, operate, and optimize our global network, including backbone, data center, public cloud, and Edge/CDN.
• Work with cross-functional teams including compute, storage, database, and recommendation systems to drive the evolution of our network.
• Work with external vendors and ISPs for device and carrier selection, testing, and verification.
• Travel as required up to 15% to 30% of the time.

Requirements

• Good understanding of network protocols including TCP/IP, DHCP, BGP, OSPF/IS-IS, and MPLS-related technologies.
• Good understanding of network monitoring protocols and tools such as SNMP, Sflow/netflow, and telemetry.
• Familiar with data center network architecture such as CLOS.
• Hands-on experience with major network devices such as Cisco, Arista, Juniper, H3C, Huawei, and other mainstream vendors.
• Self-motivated with good communication and written skills.
• Team player with participation in our global network on-call rotation.
• Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent experience based on three or more years of work experience.
• In-depth knowledge of network protocols and implementation in hyperscale data center networks.
• In-depth knowledge of MPLS-related traffic engineering technologies such as Segment Routing, RSVP, and LDP.
• In-depth knowledge of public cloud architecture such as AWS, GCP, Azure, Ali Cloud, and OCI.
• Familiar with mainstream commercial switch/router chipsets such as Broadcom and Barefoot.
• Good understanding of IPv6 and IPv4-IPv6 coexistence technologies.
• Programming/scripting experience in Python or other languages.
