An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and passionate neonatal nurse to join our Special Care Baby Unit as a Neonatal Practice and Professional Development Nurse.

In this influential role, you will lead and champion the education, training and professional development of the neonatal workforce, supporting staff to deliver high‑quality, safe and evidence‑based care to babies and their families. Working collaboratively with clinical and managerial colleagues, you will drive practice development, quality improvement and workforce capability through teaching, coaching, clinical support and competency assessment.

You will play a key role in fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, reflective practice and staff wellbeing, ensuring the neonatal team is equipped to meet current and future service needs while maintaining the highest standards of care.

Main duties of the job

As the Neonatal Practice and Professional Development Nurse, you will lead the education, professional development and clinical practice improvement of the neonatal workforce, ensuring staff have the knowledge, skills and competencies required to deliver safe, effective and evidence‑based care. You will develop, deliver and evaluate education and training programmes, support staff through competency assessment, coaching and clinical supervision, and promote a culture of lifelong learning, reflective practice and continuous improvement.

Working collaboratively with the Senior Nurse Manager for Neonates, Unit Manager and multidisciplinary colleagues, you will lead and support quality improvement initiatives, clinical audit activity and the implementation of evidence‑based practice to enhance patient outcomes and staff development. You will provide expert guidance on neonatal professional practice, support student nurses and practice assessors, contribute to policy and pathway development, and help ensure compliance with national standards, mandatory training requirements and organisational priorities.

The role also includes maintaining clinical credibility through the continued development of neonatal skills, supporting staff wellbeing and resilience, promoting research and innovation, and acting as a visible and accessible role model who inspires excellence in neonatal care for babies, families and the wider workforce.
