A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and skilled safeguarding professional to apply for the role of Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children. This is a full-time permanent post working in an innovative and forward-thinking ‘Think Family’ Safeguarding Service at
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
We are seeking a highly knowledgeable proficient professional with advanced skills in protecting children from neglect and abuse. You must have a genuine commitment to safeguarding under a whole family strategy. The Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children will provide expert advice, safeguarding supervision, intervention, and direction regarding children at risk in line with the Trust safeguarding responsibilities under the Care Act (2014), The Mental Capacity Act 2005, and the Trust Think Family Safeguarding Policy.

Main duties of the job

You must have strong professional leadership, governance, assurance, and workforce skills and will be required to oversee the delivery of care and safeguarding interventions in line with our Trust values. Experience of working within or closely with NHS services is essential alongside being able to demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding children at risk.
The Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children will also be managerially responsible for the Safeguarding Children Practitioners within the wider Think Family Safeguarding Service.
Candidates are required to show evidence of their original certificates for qualifications to the interview panel.
The role will require you to work across all areas in the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive and asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder is identified as the clinical specialist for “Safeguarding Children” across the Trust providing operational leadership, advanced knowledge and skills alongside provision of safeguarding advice, support and expertise.

The post holder will work closely with the Associate Chief Nurse for Safeguarding, Named Professional for Safeguarding Adults, Named Midwife Safeguarding and Named Nurse for Children in Care and in partnership with Named and Designated Professionals, to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach to practice when supporting children and families in need of safeguarding intervention.

The post holder will support all activities necessary to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities to safeguard/protect children and young people as set out in national guidance.

The post holder will also manage the Safeguarding Children Team as part of the wider Think Family Safeguarding Service.

The post holder will deputise for the Associate Chief Nurse for Safeguarding.

Qualifications
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Specialist Practitioner or equivalent experience in Safeguarding Children and multi-agency working
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent academic achievements / or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Completion of post graduate safeguarding course or working towards or willing to undertake.
  • Leadership or Management qualification or evidence of considerable experience in this area
  • Safeguarding Supervision Qualification
  • Training the Trainer qualification or willing to undertake
Experience
  • Experience of working at a senior level in a safeguarding environment in relation to children, young people and families who are at risk
  • Currently working in a safeguarding children role
  • Experience of working in a senior role including management or team leadership
  • Experience of undertaking audits in relation to safeguarding
  • Clinical/vocational experience relating to safeguarding and protecting children and escalating concerns
  • Experience of partnership work with children and families
  • Experience of multi-agency working and ability to work co-operatively
  • Experience of contributing to the local Safeguarding Children Partnership Sub-groups and associated workstreams
  • Experience of representing the organisation at safeguarding meetings
  • Knowledge of all safeguarding legislation, strategies, policies, procedures and wider practice
  • Knowledge of the wider safeguarding agenda including (but not exclusively) Prevent, MCA & DoLS/LPS, Modern Slavery, Harmful Practices, Domestic Abuse/Sexual Violence, LeDER, Child Death
  • Experience of working with Children who have been Exploited /Abused and experience of promoting positive emotional health
  • Ability to present to large and senior audiences
  • Experience of planning, implementation, delivery and evaluation of training sessions
  • Experience of leading innovative practice and service/change management
  • Experience of developing and implementing quality assurance systems including monitoring staff performance
  • Experience of managing and challenging situations and the ability to find meaningful resolutions
