Job description

Shift Pattern: 4 on / 4 off rotating shift pattern (2 days, 2 nights, 4 off), plus 18 consecutive days off after every 7 rotations.

If you're an engineer who enjoys fault finding, solving problems and improving equipment reliability in a safety-first environment, we'd like to hear from you.
At Smurfit Westrock, nothing is more important than ensuring everyone goes home safe every day. Safety is at the heart of every task, decision and improvement we make. As a Multi-Skilled Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining a safe, reliable and high-performing manufacturing operation.
The Role

We're looking for a practical and proactive Multi-Skilled Engineer with a Mechanical Bias to join our Northampton engineering team.

Working alongside another Shift Engineer, you'll be responsible for keeping production equipment running through a combination of planned maintenance, breakdown response, fault finding and continuous improvement activities.

This is a hands-on role where you'll have the opportunity to diagnose complex faults, deliver permanent engineering solutions, and make a real impact on site performance. While we're ideally looking for someone with strong mechanical skills, you'll also be comfortable supporting electrical fault finding and repairs when required.

Previous manufacturing experience is beneficial, but attitude, problem-solving ability and a willingness to learn are just as important.

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance across production lines and plant equipment.
  • Responding to breakdowns and restoring equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Identifying root causes and implementing long-term engineering solutions.
  • Maintaining site assets to ensure reliability and performance targets are met.
  • Recording maintenance activities using SAP (training provided).
  • Supporting engineering standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Managing spare parts usage and maintaining accurate records.
  • Working closely with production teams to minimise downtime and maximise output.
  • Supporting shift cover and overtime requirements when needed.

  • Fault-finding and diagnostic skills across mechanical and basic electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • A practical approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Flexible, adaptable and keen to learn.
  • An engineering qualification would be advantageous.
