Job summary

Mears Group PLC in Leeds is looking for a skilled Multi-Skilled Operative to support a busy responsive repairs and maintenance contract. You will work across occupied homes, delivering day-to-day repairs and aiming for first-time fixes, while maintaining safety and high workmanship standards.

The role is full-time and permanent with a salary up to £39,646.94 per year, plus a company van and fuel card, and a 42.5-hour week (8-5, Monday–Friday).

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in domestic repairs across multiple trades.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload.
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working in occupied homes.
  • Good understanding of health and safety practices.
  • Proficient use of handheld devices for recording work.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out day-to-day responsive repairs and maintenance within occupied social housing properties.
  • Diagnose faults and complete repairs across multiple trades with a first-time fix where possible.
  • Carry out carpentry repairs including skirting, architraves, doors, frames, locks, and ironmongery.
  • Undertake minor plumbing repairs such as leaks, taps, and unblocking sinks.
  • Complete patch plastering and make good following repair works.
  • Carry out basic tiling repairs including regrouting and resealing.
  • Paint and decorate to reinstate areas after maintenance works.
  • Ensure repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards and SLAs.
  • Work in occupied properties with high customer care and respect for residents.

About The Role

We’re looking for a skilled and practical Multi-Skilled Operative to join our team, supporting a busy responsive repairs and maintenance contract in Leeds. This is a hands-on role focused on delivering day-to-day repairs within social housing, ensuring properties are safe, functional, and maintained to a high standard for residents.

Working across occupied homes, you’ll be responsible for carrying out a wide range of reactive maintenance tasks across multiple trades. From minor repairs to more involved maintenance issues, you’ll take a first-time fix approach wherever possible, helping to minimise repeat visits and deliver a reliable service.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced repairs environment, can fault-find effectively, and takes pride in delivering quality workmanship. You’ll also play a key part in providing a positive experience for residents, working respectfully within their homes and keeping them informed throughout the job.

Duties
  • Carry out day-to-day responsive repairs and maintenance within occupied social housing properties
  • Diagnose faults and complete repairs across a range of trades, ensuring a first-time fix wherever possible
  • Complete carpentry repairs including skirting, architraves, doors, frames, locks, and ironmongery
  • Undertake minor plumbing repairs such as leaks, tap replacements, and unblocking sinks
  • Carry out patch plastering and make good following repair works
  • Complete basic tiling repairs including regrouting and resealing
  • Carry out painting and decorating to reinstate areas after maintenance works
  • Ensure all repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and in line with company standards and SLAs
  • Work in occupied properties, maintaining a high level of customer care and respect for residents’ homes
  • Participate in out-of-hours emergency repairs rota where required
  • Identify and report follow-on works or additional maintenance issues
  • Deliver excellent customer service and communicate clearly with residents about works being carried out
  • Accurately record job details, materials used, and outcomes using handheld devices
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicle to a good standard
  • Manage workload effectively to meet daily targets and appointments
Key Criteria
  • Proven experience in domestic repairs and maintenance across multiple trades (e.g. carpentry, plumbing, plastering, tiling, decorating)
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent customer service skills, with experience working in occupied homes
  • Good understanding of health and safety regulations and safe working practices
  • Ability to use handheld devices or job management systems to record work
  • Willingness to participate in out-of-hours emergency rota
