Job summary

LGC Standards is seeking a Microbiologist on a 12 month fixed term contract, 37.5 hours week, Monday to Friday with no weekends. You will work in a supportive team to develop laboratory experience in microbiology and proficiency testing.

You will perform routine microbiology techniques, ensure quality systems compliance, and contribute to continuous improvement while gaining exposure to ISO 17043/17034 accredited processes.

Qualifications

• A degree in Microbiology or related Life Sciences, or equivalent lab experience.
• Experience in a laboratory environment through employment, placements or projects.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach.
• Good organisational skills and ability to manage priorities.
• Proactive and flexible approach to learning and problem solving.
• Confidence working independently and as part of a team.
• Basic IT skills and keeping accurate records.

Responsibilities

• Carry out routine microbiology techniques including aseptic work, dilution prep, sub-culturing, plate reading and organism identification.
• Produce proficiency testing and reference material samples to defined specifications.
• Perform quality control testing to ensure products meet standards.
• Support preservation activities, including freeze-drying microorganisms.
• Maintain laboratory reagents, consumables and stock levels.
• Ensure laboratory cleanliness, hygiene and safety standards.
• Complete laboratory documentation and records accurately.
• Contribute to continuous improvement activities within the laboratory.
• Support compliance with accredited quality systems and laboratory procedures.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve team objectives and deliver high-quality products.

Job Description

This is an excellent opportunity for a microbiology graduate or early-career scientist looking to develop their laboratory experience within a supportive and collaborative environment.

Working alongside experienced colleagues, you'll contribute to the production and testing of microbiological samples used in LGC Axio Proficiency Testing schemes and maintaining our ISO 17043 and ISO 17034 accredited quality systems.

What you'll be doing
