Job summary

EMBL-EBI invites applications for a bioinformatician to maintain and expand Ensembl Microbes genomes for microbial research communities. You will load new annotations, ensure data quality, and troubleshoot releases, working with cross-disciplinary teams on data pipelines and pangenome representations.

The role combines coding, pipeline development and documentation, with hybrid working on the Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridgeshire.

Qualifications

• PhD or Master’s with relevant experience required.
• Strong Python; production-quality code.
• Experience with genome annotation tools and formats (FASTA, GFF3).
• Experience with pipelines (Nextflow/Snakemake).
• Relational DBs, UNIX/Linux, HPC/cloud environments.
• Software development best practices (Git, testing, reviews).
• Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools and validation methods.
• Excellent English communication, both written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Maintain Ensembl Microbes genomes, load new annotations and diagnose issues.
• Coordinate releases within a release-based environment.
• Evaluate new genome annotation tools for microbial taxa.Contribute to functional annotation pipelines and pangenome representation.
• Design and implement efficient technical solutions and maintain docs.
• Engage with EMBL-EBI collaborators and users.
