Job summary

Academics is seeking a Mental Health Teaching Assistant in Chippenham, Wiltshire to support children aged 5-16 with SEMH and anxiety, alongside teachers, SEN professionals, therapists and support staff.

The ideal candidate is compassionate, patient, reliable and emotionally resilient, with a genuine interest in children's mental health. Salary is paid weekly via PAYE (£85-£110 per day) for a full-time, Monday–Friday role starting September 2026.

Qualifications

  • Compassionate, patient, reliable, and emotionally resilient.
  • Strong interest in children's mental health and wellbeing.
  • Experience in education, childcare, mental health, SEND, youth work, care, or support work is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support tailored to individual children's needs.
  • Help children recognise, understand, and communicate their emotions.
  • Support children experiencing anxiety, low confidence, emotional dysregulation, or social difficulties.
  • Help children develop appropriate strategies for managing stress and challenging situations.
  • Encourage children to return to learning following periods of anxiety, distress, or disengagement.
  • Promote positive behaviour through calm, consistent, and supportive approaches.
  • Develop children's communication, social skills, confidence, and independence.
  • Provide a reassuring presence during challenging moments.
  • Work closely with teachers and SEN staff to follow individual support strategies.
