The Garden Clinic Sexual Health Service at Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust has a vacancy for a Lead HIV Nurse Specialist. This is an opportunity to work with a highly motivated team to provide specialist knowledge, support, and advice on HIV/AIDS to patients, carers and across the HIV Service. Whilst being an independent autonomous practitioner, to work collaboratively with the staff in primary and secondary care to facilitate a high quality, seamless service to people with HIV along agreed care pathways. To work as an independent prescriber in the long-term care of stable HIV positive people.

Main duties of the job

The Lead HIV Specialist Nurse will provide strong leadership and management to develop nursing at a strategic and operational level within the service. Working with the Consultant Clinical Lead and the Service Manager, the Lead HIV Specialist Nurse will help drive and shape the Sexual Health Service as it evolves to meet the demands of commissioners and the local community, ensuring the effective use of technology and the continued development of advanced nursing practice within the service.

To take a proactive and strategic role in the development of HIV services. Responsible for HIV nursing policy and development of nursing care within the service and contributes to the development of policies, procedures, and standards.

The Lead HIV Specialist Nurse is expected to deliver high quality training, education and clinical assessments, providing a highly visible and professional presence and being responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients of the Sexual Health Service. The post holder will have direct managerial responsibility over the HIV Nursing and provide clinical support and supervision to the wider nursing team.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications/Training

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Non-medical prescriber
  • Recognised qualification in management of sexually transmitted infections/STIF Intermediate or equivalent

Previous Experience

  • Significant experience in Sexual Health
  • Experience in innovative sexual health service development
  • Proven experience of leadership and managing change in challenging environments.
  • Experience of working with patients from a wide variety of backgrounds including age and ethnicity
  • Experience of HIV Care
