Who are we looking for?

Barrie Knitwear is looking for multiple Menders to join our Knitting team in Hawick.

We are particularly interested in candidates with Mending, Hand sewing or textile manufacturing experience, but previous Mending experience is not essential. We can provide full training and ongoing development for the right people, making this opportunity suitable for both experienced Menders and those looking to develop their skills in a trainee capacity.

We're looking for people who are practical, patient and have a great eye for detail, with pride in their work and a desire to develop their skills within a world-renowned luxury knitwear manufacturer.

Who is Barrie Knitwear?

Barrie Knitwear is a globally renowned fashion manufacturer, celebrated for combining exceptional technical expertise with traditional craftsmanship to create complex couture cashmere garments. Based in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, we have over 100 years of heritage and proudly supply some of the world’s most prestigious luxury fashion houses. As we continue to grow and transform, this is an exciting time to join our team.

What will you be doing?

As a Trainee Mender, you'll join our Knitting team and learn how to identify and deal with specific production issues on knitted garments, helping to ensure products meet our high standards before moving through the manufacturing process.

Your training will include:

  • Learning how to identify and carefully deal with pulling-in ends on integral button-hole trims.

  • Developing your understanding of knitted garment construction and quality standards.

  • Learning how to identify and correct minor issues accurately and consistently.

  • Working carefully to maintain the appearance and quality of our luxury knitwear.

  • Following established processes and quality standards.

  • Working alongside experienced Menders and Knitting colleagues as you develop your skills.

  • Supporting the team to ensure work is completed efficiently and to the required standard.

  • Progressively developing your wider mending skills as part of your ongoing training and development.

  • Maintaining a clean, organised and safe working environment.

This role is particularly suited to someone who enjoys hands-on, detailed work and takes pride in producing work to a high standard.

What will you bring to the role?

You don't need previous mending experience – we'll teach you the skills you need.

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Practical and hands-on, with an interest in learning a skilled manufacturing role.

  • Patient and able to concentrate on detailed work.

  • Naturally quality-focused, with a good eye for detail.

  • Comfortable working with small components and carrying out repetitive, precise tasks.

  • Reliable and committed to learning and developing new skills.

  • Able to follow instructions and established processes accurately.

  • A good team player who is happy to learn from experienced colleagues.

  • Motivated to build a longer-term career within manufacturing.

Previous experience in textiles, sewing, knitting, manufacturing, craft work or another hands-on environment would be advantageous, but is not essential.

What do we offer?

At Barrie, we want our people to have the opportunity to develop and build a career with us.

You’ll benefit from:

  • Flexible working options (role dependent)

  • 33 days annual leave (including public holidays)

  • Early finish on Fridays

  • Flexible benefits scheme (including Cycle to Work and gym discounts)

  • Time Off in Lieu scheme

  • Employer pension contribution

  • Life assurance Scheme

  • Health & wellbeing programme (including health cash plan)

  • Ongoing training and development opportunities
