Job description

West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA),

As a Member Engagement Executive, you'll join a pioneering team that is helping redefine how elected members engage with one of the most ambitious Combined Authorities in the country. The Member Engagement Team is widely recognised for its innovative approach, working at the forefront of local government to ensure that the work of the West Midlands Combined Authority is accessible, engaging and relevant to councillors across the region. From major transport reforms and housing initiatives to economic growth, skills and investment programmes, you'll help bridge the gap between complex policy and the people elected to represent local communities.

There has never been a more exciting time to join a Combined Authority. With Government's commitment to go further and faster on devolution, Combined Authorities are taking on new powers, responsibilities and opportunities that are reshaping places and transforming public services. As a result, our work sits at the heart of some of the most significant political and policy developments in the country.

No two days are the same. One day you might be supporting engagement on a major strategic programme, the next helping deliver a regional event, analysing engagement data, coordinating a member visit, or working alongside officers and senior leaders to strengthen relationships with local authorities. You'll gain exposure to high-profile projects, senior stakeholders and complex political environments, all while helping ensure elected members have the information, insight and support they need to play their part in shaping the future of the West Midlands.

We're looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys variety, embraces change and is motivated by making a real impact. If you're politically aware, highly organised, naturally curious and excited by the opportunity to work at the centre of regional decision-making during a period of unprecedented change, we'd love to hear from you.

What You’ll Be Doing.
  • Support the delivery of a joined-up approach to briefing and engaging Constituent Authority Leaders and Chief Executives.
  • Help coordinate political engagement linked to WMCA Board decisions, mayoral priorities and regional priorities.
  • Support relationship management through the Near Neighbours programme, helping develop and maintain partnerships with neighbouring authorities.
  • Build and maintain good relationships with councillors, acting as an ambassador for WMCA and supporting a culture of collaboration and engagement.
  • Work with teams across WMCA to collate information and coordinate responses to councillors and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate member communications, briefings, visits and engagement activity.
  • Lead the coordination and delivery of member-facing communications, including the monthly Members’ Round-Up.
  • Work with teams to identify and organise all-councillor webinars and briefings.
  • Support the delivery of member induction, development and training activity.
  • Collate briefing material to ensure senior leaders are appropriately prepared before local authority engagements and meetings.
  • Use CRM, PowerBI and other tools to support accurate records, analysis and continuous improvement.
  • Support the evaluation of engagement performance and feed member feedback into organisational strategy, projects and service design.
  • Ensure consistency and clarity across all member-facing communications, aligning tone and messaging with WMCA’s values and branding.
What’s Essential.
  • Experience working with and meeting the needs of a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a political environment, with the ability to demonstrate discretion and confidentiality when required.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to gather information and present it clearly, professionally and engagingly.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to extract actionable insights from stakeholder data and feedback.
  • Ability to build collaborative, trusting and productive relationships.
  • Highly organised, able to prioritise, handle change and work effectively under pressure.
  • Degree-level education or equivalent experience.
