An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Pharmacy Emergency Floor team at LUHFT on the Royal Liverpool site, working alongside pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and ATOs.

We are seeking a registered pharmacy technician with an accuracy checking certificate who is eager to develop their potential and leverage the scope this role offers to provide patient-centered service delivery.

This is a full-time position (37.5 hours). Our pharmacy technicians work across 7 days, covering hours from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 4.15pm on weekends. Staff can request shifts and days off within the rota for flexibility.

Services are provided to the Emergency Department and the Acute Medical Unit. You will play a vital role in ensuring optimal pharmacy service performance while working in busy departments as part of the Medicine Management team.

Technicians are encouraged to progress through additional training to advance their careers.

Main duties of the job

You will collaborate closely with pharmacists and healthcare professionals in the Emergency Department and Acute Medical Unit to deliver high-quality, patient-focused medicines management services.

Your responsibilities include ensuring safe, cost-effective pharmaceutical care, facilitating patient discharge and transfer, and maintaining excellent organizational skills.

You will also rotate through our dispensary, utilizing your accuracy checking certificate.

You must work accurately, pay attention to detail, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and uphold high standards in patient care.

Our services operate daily, including weekends, bank holidays, and late nights.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical technical services to POD wards, including medication histories and cost-effective dispensing, accuracy checking patients' own drugs, and assessing suitability for reuse.
  • Offer ward-based dispensing services, including accuracy checking and liaising with GPs, nursing homes, and ward staff, while supporting patient concordance and education.
  • Support ward supplies under supervision, ensuring adherence to procedures.
  • Assist clinical pharmacists in pharmaceutical care provision on POD wards.
  • Communicate with healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive pharmaceutical care.
  • Interpret medical notes and test results, identify issues, and refer to appropriate staff.
  • Counsel and educate patients and carers on medication use, assessing understanding.
  • Assess patient compliance, arrange aids, and support discharge processes.
  • Perform final accuracy checks on prescriptions previously reviewed by pharmacists, correcting errors as needed.
  • Develop and manage training for technical staff on ward systems, and supervise their implementation and adherence.
  • Train nursing staff on ward systems and provide pharmaceutical advice, including lectures when appropriate.
  • Conduct audits and contribute to service improvement projects.
  • Coordinate and participate in training courses, personal development reviews, and quality initiatives.
  • Support pharmacy operations, including stock control, record keeping, and handling queries.
  • Participate in pharmacy objectives aligned with national standards and safety regulations.
  • Dispense clinical trial medications following protocols and guidelines.
  • Support sterile and cytotoxic preparations following aseptic procedures and safety standards.
