Department: Pharmacy
Band 8a: £53,755 - £60,504 per annum
Full-Time 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

To support this next step, the Pharmacy Department is currently looking for an outstanding Pharmacist to join our team as our Medication Safety Officer (MSO). Applicants must be passionate about providing high-quality patient care, medication safety, and ensuring safe processes through robust governance across the Trust.

We seek someone committed to delivering excellence and developing our Pharmacy service further, supporting all staff within our wider team and the organization. A proactive approach and dedication to personal and service development are essential to enable the appointed individual to train and mentor colleagues in partnership with pharmacy staff.

Weekend work to supply urgently needed medications, including TTOs, is required of all pharmacy staff. The post holder will also participate in the on-call rota.

  1. To act as the MSO and be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating medication safety initiatives across the organization in line with relevant guidance.
  2. To develop, implement, and evaluate a program to promote learning from medication incidents within pharmacy and across the organization.
  3. To ensure comprehensive reporting on medication incidents to relevant committees and drive actions to improve patient safety.
  4. To lead on the governance of Controlled Drugs, working with the Clinical Director of Pharmacy and the Controlled Drug Accountable Officer.
  5. To support the Medicine Use and Quality Manager in developing, delivering, and evaluating their service in accordance with standards and guidance.
  6. To facilitate the continuing professional development of all reports in medication safety domains.
  7. To support the Medicine Use & Quality Manager in developing and delivering the medicines governance agenda, including pharmacy-wide policies and procedures for safe, effective, and affordable medicines use.
  8. To represent the Trust in meetings with local, regional, and national MSO networks in primary and secondary care.
  9. To support patient-centered medicines optimization as an advanced pharmacy practitioner and, where service needs require, to practice as a non-medical prescriber within an agreed scope of practice.
