Job summary

CIBSE Journal is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to join a major refinery turnaround in the UK. You will develop mechanical scopes, work with contractors and engineering teams, and support from early engineering through to execution.

Ideal candidates have a strong background in refining or heavy industry, experience with fixed/pressure equipment, and a practical, delivery-focused approach. The contract is 2 years outside IR35 with site work in Cheshire.

Qualifications

• Must have Mechanical Engineering qualification or equivalent experience.
• Strong mechanical background in refining, petrochemical, process plant, power or heavy industry.
• Experience with fixed/pressure equipment, boilers, vessels, piping or similar.
• Exposure to brownfield projects, shutdowns or turnarounds is beneficial.
• Able to review technical docs and work with contractors and multidisciplinary teams.
• Knowledge of mechanical engineering codes and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver mechanical scopes for major turnaround projects.
• Support life-extension, repair and replacement across vessels, boilers, exchangers, piping, valves and internals.
• Review contractor designs, specifications, calculations, repair methodologies and workpacks.
• Support constructability, access, lifting, isolation and execution planning.
• Provide mechanical input into estimates, procurement, schedules and turnaround readiness.
• Identify and manage mechanical risks throughout project delivery.
• Provide technical and field engineering support during the turnaround.
• Ensure work complies with engineering standards and site requirements.
