At Babcock, we’re working to create a safe and secure world. Join us as a Mechanical Fitter at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site and play your part in this mission.

The role

As a Mechanical Fitter, you’ll be part of something bigger, maintaining and supporting the Royal Navy's fleet. Your work may involve Warships, Submarines, or supporting complex engineering projects in our factories. You could be working on equipment like fluid pumps, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems. Your daily tasks may include:

  • Installing and aligning mechanical equipment meticulously
  • Working from engineering drawings and specifications with attention to detail
  • Conducting system tests and surveys for optimal performance
  • Troubleshooting mechanical issues and providing solutions

This is a full-time role, 35 hours per week, based on-site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and instructions
  • Operating workshop machinery specific to mechanical fitting
  • Experience in marine engineering, especially on Royal Navy ships, submarines, or large commercial ships, or relevant engineering sectors
  • Removing, installing, and overhauling marine mechanical equipment, focusing on propulsion, auxiliary, and power systems
Qualifications

Candidates should have a solid foundation in mechanical engineering, such as:

  • Completion of a marine or naval engineering apprenticeship
  • An indentured apprenticeship in mechanical discipline
  • A Level-3 Modern Apprenticeship in mechanical discipline
  • A Level-3 Mechanical Engineering qualification
Security Clearance
