Job description

Mechanical Engineering Technician

Location: Belfast

Salary: £19.11 per hour

Hours: 36.25 hours a week

Job Description

The Mechanical Engineering Technician (MET) will work as part of the Fleet Mechanical & Engineering teams within three regional workshops, ensuring the service delivery of all specialist operational equipment and vehicles. Responsibilities include inspection, diagnostics, planned maintenance, emergency repairs, bodywork, coach building, and modifications across the NIFRS fleet. The role requires working across various trade disciplines and participating in the Regional Standby Rota to support operational resilience outside of regular hours, including emergency repairs and vehicle recovery on a 24/7 basis.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Repair, maintain, modify, and service all NIFRS emergency response fire vehicles and supporting equipment in accordance with legislation and best practices.
  2. Diagnose faults, perform repairs, and conduct in-depth overhauls on a range of specialist vehicles and equipment.
  3. Assist other trades within Fleet & Engineering services and communication departments as needed.
  4. Participate in the Regional Engineering on-call rota, making repair decisions independently during on-call periods.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Level 3 trade qualification in Vehicle Repair and Maintenance (NQF).
  • At least two years’ post-apprentice experience in a trade role, including heavy vehicle work.
  • Experience in plant mechanics and light vehicle repair.
  • Level 3 qualification in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle system repair (NQF).
  • Qualified to install, maintain, and fault-find electrical systems up to 240v and 110v.
  • Excellent record-keeping skills with computerised repair and inspection data.
  • Proficiency in IT software and management information systems (MIS).
  • Current UK C Class driving license.
Additional Requirements
  • Participation in the Regional Engineering on-call rota, including working antisocial hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in physically demanding environments following health and safety practices.
