Job summary

Capgemini Engineering seeks a Mechanical Engineering Principal Lead to drive heat decarbonisation programmes across industrial and infrastructure projects in Telford. You will lead the design and delivery of low-carbon heating and thermal energy solutions closely collaborating with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in Mechanical, Thermal, or Energy Engineering, experience in HVAC and heat pumps, and strong stakeholder management skills.

Job description

Overview

  • Mechanical Engineering Principal Lead / Decarbonisation Lead to drive heat decarbonisation programmes across industrial and infrastructure projects.
  • Lead the design and delivery of low‑carbon heating and thermal energy solutions, working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and deliver sustainable engineering outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead heat decarbonisation strategies for industrial and manufacturing facilities.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of low‑carbon heating systems, including ASHPs and LTHW networks.
  • Deliver thermal modelling, energy assessments, and feasibility studies to identify decarbonisation opportunities.
  • Provide technical leadership for mechanical engineering standards, design reviews, risk assessments, and HAZOPs.
  • Collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated energy solutions.
  • Mentor engineers and drive innovation, continuous improvement, and carbon reduction initiatives.
  • Ensure project alignment with RIBA Stage 3 and 4 design requirements.

Qualifications

  • Degree‑qualified Mechanical, Thermal, or Energy Engineer with significant experience in heat decarbonisation and energy optimisation projects.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, heat pumps, thermal energy storage, heat recovery technologies, thermal modelling, and energy performance analysis.
  • Experience leading design reviews, HAZOP studies, and engineering risk management activities.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status desirable.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, leadership, mentoring, and communication skills.
  • Capability to manage multidisciplinary teams and drive successful project delivery.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain BPSS or higher security clearance; Developed Vetting is required for some projects.
  • Will be based in Broughton, requiring 2–3 days a week in office.
