BAM UK&I are looking for a Mechanical Design engineer to join our team in Hemel Hempstead.
We are looking to recruit a Mechanical Design/ Building Physics engineer to work alongside our engineering design team and to work closely with our associates in developing our business.
The successful candidate shall demonstrate a good level of mechanical engineering knowledge, with experience in dynamic thermal modelling, with enthusiasm to develop and grow in experience.
Specific structured and unstructured training will be given as part of the role to develop skills in building services engineering and sustainability.
You will report directly to the MEP Technical Director/Associates and will be expected to work alongside all other design disciplines within BAM Design to ensure a coordinated approach to building design as well as the wider BAM business units.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Carry out feasibility studies
- Building regulations compliance modelling (Part L/EPC)
- Thermal comfort analysis (CIBSE Guide A, TM52 and TM59)
- CIBSE TM54 Operational Energy analysis
- Passive design and low-zero carbon technology studies
- Supporting Net-zero operational energy studies for new and retrofit projects
- Input into supporting planning documents e.g. energy strategies
- Advising clients and architects on energy use and conservation in a range of buildings and sites, aiming to minimise the environmental impact and reduce the carbon footprint
- Participating in preparation of bid presentations and deliverables (focus on energy)
- Provide analysis for heating, cooling, ventilation, air conditioning and BMS solutions
- Work closely with other project engineers and multidisciplinary teams
- Liaise with site construction teams on day to day running of projects
- Attend client meetings, progress meetings and production of associated minutes/reports
- Agree schemes with Local Authority Planners, Building Control etc. and gain all necessary approvals
- Produce project specifications as and where required
- Advocate knowledge sharing to all members of the project teams
- Ensure all projects are designed and managed in line with our duties under the CDM regulations
- Working alongside junior engineers and being involved in their professional development
- The post holder is expected to carry out, in addition to the already mentioned duties, any other duties reasonably expected with the general level of the post
Typical work activities will include:
- Undertaking thermal modelling in IES for multiple projects
- Undertaking mechanical services designs from various RIBA/BSRIA Stages
- Ensure that building services designs meet health and safety requirements and environmental legislation
- Liaising with electrical and public health design teams, architects, structural engineers architectural technologists and other construction professionals
- Giving presentations and writing reports for bid submissions, technical reviews, site reports, meetings, etc.
- Promoting energy efficiency and other sustainability initiatives
Education and Qualifications
- Corporate member of CIBSE or IMechE is desirable
- Chartered Engineer or working towards Engineering Council accreditation
- Engaged in Institutes professional development is desirable
- Degree qualified is desirable

Demonstrable experience within a similar role.

General Experience
We would expect the Mechanical Design/ Building Physics engineer to have the following general experience:
- General experience of working on a number of large multidiscipline projects across all market sectors with a particular focus on Education and Commercial
- Experience in producing technical specifications, and managing all stages of multi-disciplinary projects from proposals and initial studies through to full design and construction management is required
- Excellent knowledge of Building Regulations and CIBSE/BSRIA design standards
- Working Knowledge of British Standards which are applied daily to designing and specifying mechanical services systems including; heating, ventilation air conditioning, natural/hybrid ventilation, low and zero carbon technology
- Working knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to ensure systems are coordinated in a complex construction or refurbishment project
- Ensure that the design and maintenance of building systems meets legislative and health and safety requirement
- Excellent knowledge of RIBA/BRSIA work stages and the deliverables associated to the building services industry
