Job Description:

Job Purpose

The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities. We maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks, reservoirs, museums, archives, and historic buildings, preserving them for future generations. Our waterways are vibrant and exciting workplaces.

There are many mechanically and electrically operated pumps, bridges, and locks on our waterways, combining modern technology with historic structures to ensure longevity. These include water pumps, hydraulic systems for bridge/lock operation, and mechanical/electrical actuators for sluices, bridges, and locks.

As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and repairing M&E structures, plant, and equipment, safeguarding the network’s reputation as a valued national asset and providing excellent customer service.

Our Gloucester and South West maintenance team seeks a qualified M&E engineer to assist with electrical and mechanical maintenance, especially hydraulics. The role requires isolating power supplies, fault-finding within 400v/240v/24v systems, and resolving issues. Due to lone working, appropriate qualifications are essential for legal compliance.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with mechanical and electrical isolation methods, capable of fault-finding independently. Training and ongoing development will be provided to support your growth in this role.

Location & coverage

Based in Gloucester or Worcester, with regular travel along regional canal networks. Occasional work in Wales & Southwest may be required. Residing nearby is essential for regular travel.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

This role supports the Trust’s goals to enhance safety and increase waterways usage. Your skills will help maintain our infrastructure.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work safely, ensuring the safety of others and promoting safe practices.
  • Manage volunteers during works, ensuring safety, quality, and volunteer satisfaction.
  • Support maintenance and repair programs, overseeing contractors and ensuring infrastructure is well maintained.
  • Provide mechanical and electrical support for troubleshooting and resolution.
  • Produce recommendations for minor problems and design changes under supervision.
  • Deliver reactive responses to maintain network availability and safety.
  • Monitor and report on M&E asset conditions.
  • Operate assets to provide excellent customer service and respond to inquiries.
  • Uphold the Trust’s values and behaviors.

About you

Seeking an Electrical Engineer with mechanical knowledge, experienced in fault-finding wiring systems at 400/230/24 volts, ideally within water industry, factory, or manufacturing environments. You should be capable of making independent decisions to ensure compliance and fault-free operation.

Experience with water plant, pumps, hydraulics, production equipment, traffic lights, packaging machines, lifts, escalators, or heating systems is advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • C&G2391/2 or equivalent (testing and inspection)
  • NVQ3/C&G in Electrical Discipline or equivalent
  • Apprentice-trained multi-skilled maintenance engineer
  • Additional mechanical or electrical courses are beneficial
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience as an Electrical Engineer; mechanical experience is a plus
  • Experience with hydraulic systems and fault finding is advantageous
  • Experience with electrical control panels is essential

Skills:

  • Knowledge of computerised maintenance systems
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Full driving license

Safety & Safeguarding

  • Comply with Health & Safety policies, report incidents, and assess risks.
