Job summary

Formula One Management Limited is seeking a Mechanical Design Manager to lead the Mechanical Engineering & Design team on the FRO project. You will own end-to-end mechanical design from concept through testing and deployment, mentoring a multidisciplinary team and aligning with budgets and schedules.

Candidates should have a mechanical engineering and product design background, with CEng preferred and strong CAD/CAE/FEA expertise.

Qualifications

• Qualification in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design.
• People management qualification or similar technical discipline.
• CEng status with IMechE or IED preferred.
• Previous team-management experience and decision making.
• Strong background in mechanical design and CAD/CAE/FEA tools.
• Experience from concept through testing and deployment of mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a mechanical design team to deliver high-quality products.
• Own all mechanical engineering and product design from requirements to testing & deployment.
• Manage budgets, schedules and >£1 million projects and coordinate group forecasts.
• Provide progress updates to senior management and oversee travel for the team.
• Research new technologies and guide future product opportunities.
• Offer guidance and mentoring on technical and non-technical matters.

Role Overview

Mechanical Design Manager – Mechanical Engineering & Design team (FRO project). Reports to the Head of Mechanical Engineering & Design. Lead a multidisciplinary team to design, develop and support bespoke mechanical solutions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a mechanical design team, ensuring a high‑quality first‑class product portfolio.
• Own all aspects of mechanical engineering and product design from requirements capture through to testing, deployment and support.
• Maintain project alignment with business interests, budgets and schedules, managing projects >2years and >£1million.
• Provide regular progress updates to senior management and manage group budgets, forecasting and budget proposals.
• Coordinate travel, requests and changes for the team.
• Research new technologies, processes and tools; identify future product opportunities.
• Offer guidance, mentoring and support on both technical and non‑technical subjects.

Qualifications and Experience

• Qualification in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design.
• People management qualification or similar technical discipline.
• CEng status with IMechE or IED preferred.
• Previous team‑management experience and proven technical decision making.
• Strong background in mechanical design, CAD/CAE/FEA tools.
• Experience from concept through testing and deployment of mechanical systems.
• Desirable: Managing budgets, forecasting, supplier and contractor relationships; leading large high‑profile projects.

Knowledge & Skills

• Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
• Strong planning, prioritisation and multitasking abilities.
• Expertise in PTC CREO, WindChill PDMLink, FEA and manufacturing processes (CNC, fabrication, extrusion, vacuum forming).
• Deep knowledge of materials (aluminium, plastics, H/C composites) and BS8888.
