Job summary

Formula 1 is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer on a fixed-term contract through 2030 to join our Mechanical Engineering & Design team. You will design, develop, and produce high-quality mechanical solutions, manage 3D/2D drafting, and oversee full design cycles with thorough documentation.

The role requires Creo experience (2.0+), AutoCAD familiarity, and Windchill PDMLink proficiency. Occasional travel to events abroad may be required; UK-based work from Biggin Hill area is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Mechanical Design or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience designing with PTC Creo 2.0 or above.
• Experience administering and releasing in Windchill PDMLink 10.1.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and produce high quality, reliable mechanical solutions with full documentation.
• Create components and assemblies for Mechanical Engineering and R&D projects.
• Support and maintain mechanical systems in the UK and abroad, diagnosing issues and performing fault-finding.
• Carry out 3D modelling and 2D drafting, updating existing designs and diagrams.
• Lead full design cycles from conception to commissioning, estimating durations and costs.
• Produce complete documentation for designs and enhancements; report to R&D management as required.
• Handover projects to operations with documentation and assist with issue resolution.
• Collaborate with suppliers, manufacturers and consultancies to define requirements.
• Decompose complex problems and design innovative solutions; manage Windchill/PDMLink records.

Role Overview:

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join Formula 1's Mechanical Engineering & Design team for a fixed term contract until 2030. Reporting into our Mechanical Design Manager, this role will design, develop and produce high quality, reliable mechanical solutions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Design, develop and produce high quality, reliable mechanical solutions (including comprehensive documentation).
• Design and draught components and assemblies for all Mechanical Engineering and R&D projects.
• Support, modify, maintain & repair all FOM mechanical systems (in the UK and abroad), including rapid fault finding, evaluation and diagnosing of problems that occur, in an accurate and timely manner.
• Carrying out 3D modelling & 2D design/ draught work whilst maintaining/ updating and modifying existing designs/ diagrams.
• Carry out full design cycle project/task work, through Conception, Design, Development, Prototyping, Testing, Diagnosing, Manufacture and Commissioning. Produce high quality, reliable products/ systems that require the minimal of maintenance and support. Estimate accurately project and tasks duration and costing.
• Produce appropriate and complete documentation for all designs/ enhancements/ projects worked on. Report (including producing reports) as required by the R&D Groups’ Management.
• Hand over completed projects & assembly modifications to operationally responsible departments, with relevant documentation and assist operational departments as required regarding any issues that may arise.
• Liaise efficiently with other staff/ departments/ teams and outside organisations (manufacturers, suppliers, and consultancies), establishing and maintaining effective and efficient relations, overcoming problems and defining requirements.
• Decompose complex problems and produce simple and effective solutions, whilst also designing innovative cutting‑edge solutions for other projects.
• Administer of Windchill/PDMLink, drawing identification database and Drawing Office documentation.
• Perform the role of R&D (Mechanical) support representative at events abroad. Also occasionally travel to events abroad as Maintenance Technician when required; assist co‑ordinate rigging and de‑rigging mechanical equipment and structures as required.
• Support, advise and from time to time assist operational departments with their activities and duties, also assist Technicians when required.

Qualifications

You may also have the following qualifications:

• Degree in Mechanical Design or related Engineering discipline.

Experience

Prior to the role it would be essential that you:

• At least 3 years’ experience in designing with PTC Creo 2.0 or above.
• Experience of using AutoCAD 2015 or above.
• At least 2 years’ experience in administering and releasing using Windchill PDMLink 10.1.
• Experience in mathematical analysis for complex designs.
• Experience and in-depth knowledge of drawing standards specifically technical product specification BS8888

Some desirable experience that you may bring to the role:

• Experience of bespoke low volume mechanical design projects.

Knowledge & Skills

Prior to the role it is essential that you demonstrate:

• Proven hands‑on practical skills and good understanding/sense of aesthetics, ergonomics, shock and vibration effects
• Familiar with a comprehensive range of materials and manufacturing systems.
• Competent in writing technical reports, specifications and user documentation.
• Analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to evaluate reports.
• Good computer literacy.
