Job summary

Oxford Flow in Witney, UK, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a fast-moving R&D team developing pressure and control valves for oil & gas, energy, and water sectors. You will model parts and assemblies, perform tolerancing per BS8888:2020, and contribute to validation testing and manufacturing processes, reporting to the Senior Engineer.

Applicants should hold a Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree (or equivalent) with at least two years in a related role; hydraulic experience

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 2+ years industry experience.
  • Hydraulic/seal design experience is advantageous.
  • Experience with metal casting/forging is beneficial.
  • Industrial valve development experience is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with B16.34/B16.5/API6D/ISO14313 is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Create product models and drawings in SolidWorks with GPS tolerancing per BS8888:2020.
  • Write and review technical documents and manuals.
  • Create parts, assemblies, and BOMs in the PDM system.
  • Undertake experimental/validation testing.
  • Improve manufacturing and assembly processes for products.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth product transitions.

The Role

The Mechanical Design Engineer will join a talented innovative research and development team developing flow control products, primarily pressure and control valves. The role will report to a Principal Engineer / Senior Mechanical Engineer and assist in a sub team developing and growing our ES valve range, as well as helping across the engineering department on other product developments. We are an output-oriented company striving for excellence, making real products within the oil and gas, energy, and water sectors with new ideas.

Responsibilities
  • Create product models and drawings in a CAD package (SolidWorks), including a detailed understanding of geometrical product specification (GPS) tolerancing to BS8888:2020, dimensioning and stress analysis (finite element and hand calculation).
  • Write and review technical documents to support products, from build procedures, operation and maintenance manuals and technical files / design reports.
  • Create parts, assemblies, bills of materials within our PDM system.
  • Undertake experimental and validation testing where required with our products.
  • Developing and improving manufacturing and assembly processes / procedures for both new and existing products.
  • To work with other departments within the business to ensure products transition to use customers efficiently.
Required Skills And Experience
  • A degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. An advanced modern apprenticeship to a minimum of HNC level with multiple year industry experience will be considered.
  • Experience in a similar or related role
  • At least 2 year of industry experience
  • Hydraulic experience or experience designing with various seals for pressure containing applications would be advantageous.
  • Experience of metal product manufacturing methods, in particular casting and forging processes, would be highly beneficial
  • Industrial valve development and manufacture would be beneficial
  • Experience of efficient product design scaling approaches would be beneficial
  • Experience using B16.34, B16.5 or API6D/ ISO 14313 would be advantageous.
Candidates Should Have Demonstrable Expertise In Some Of
  • Mechanical component and/or pressure vessel design
  • Stress analysis of safety-critical components
  • Working to industry design standards or similar internal processes
  • Proficiency in a number of the following tools (listed in order of importance):
  • CAD: Modelling and drafting for manufacture in SolidWorks or similar
  • Finite element analysis: SolidWorks Simulation, (or equivalent package)
  • Experience working in a small company environment, ideally in the industrial sector preferred but not essential
  • Can do and hands on approach when needed to support wider team activities
