Job description

Mechanical Design Engineer

Summary:

Do you want to be involved in all stages of project delivery, from feasibility to commissioning?

Are you ready to take responsibility for mechanical engineering output on key projects?

If this sounds like you, then you’ll want to learn more about this opportunity…

We aim to be the water company people want to be supplied by and want to work for.

Working in the MEICA team of the South East Water (SEW) Engineering Department, you will report to the Senior Mechanical Engineer and be responsible for the mechanical engineering output as part of a project team(s) on capital engineering schemes.

As a client-side Mechanical Engineer, you will be involved across all stages of project delivery, from feasibility, optioneering, scoping, design, through to construction and commissioning, as part of a multi-disciplinary project team. You will contribute to technical deliverables on Capital Projects under the guidance of Project Managers and the Senior Mechanical Engineer, following standards set by the Lead MEICA Engineer and relevant asset standards.

You will need to manage and prioritize your workload to meet various project demands, adhering to Health and Safety/CDM requirements, actively identifying hazards and working towards mitigation or removal through engineering design. Building and maintaining collaborative relations with peers, internal customers, stakeholders, and contractors is essential.

While the role offers flexible/hybrid working (office/home), travel within South East Water’s supply areas may be required for project sites.

Main responsibilities

  • Design and specify projects related to clean/potable water, including treatment plants, pumped systems, pipework, chemical dosing, and mixing.
  • Design/analysis of hydraulic systems, including pump sizing & selection, head loss calculations, system curves, air valve design, and surge considerations.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and control systems, including pressure, flow, level, and analytical instrumentation (e.g., chlorine, turbidity, pH).
  • Building engineering physics and services—heat, ventilation, noise, moisture.
  • Interface with other disciplines and integration with mechanical design.
  • Review of contractor designs and deliverables, ensuring compliance with legislation, standards, and specifications, and responding to Technical Queries.
  • Project delivery under NEC Design & Construct and PSC contracts, with input into contract processes.

Skills / Qualifications / Experience

  • HNC or Degree in Engineering or equivalent training.
  • Technically competent, knowing when to refer to others.
  • Proven ability to deliver projects with minimal issues.
  • Ability to work under pressure, within budgets and deadlines.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Active in professional development, with a goal of obtaining professional registration (e.g., chartership).
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Strong technical report writing and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; knowledge of Google Workspace is a plus.

We value diversity and are committed to inclusion across age, race, gender, ethnicity, religion, and identity. We promote equal opportunities and fair treatment throughout your employment journey.

  • 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays, increasing to 6 weeks with service.
  • Flexible holiday buy/sell scheme.
