Job summary

Senex Recruitment is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for a specialist engineering company offering hybrid/remote working. The role includes attending the Melksham, Wiltshire site up to two days per week, with overnight accommodation provided when needed.

Travel to suppliers/customers will be necessary within reasonable distance across the region. The position covers the full design lifecycle, from concept to documentation, with support from a Technical Director.

Qualifications

• BEng or MEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, or HNC/HND with relevant industry experience.
• Strong 3D CAD skills, ideally SolidWorks.
• Experience producing detailed mechanical designs and manufacturing drawings.
• Understanding of machining, welding and heavy steel fabrication.
• Experience sourcing engineering materials and components, and managing external suppliers.

Responsibilities

• Develop, modify and optimise mechanical designs using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD.
• Produce accurate production drawings, CAD models and associated information.
• Convert existing and legacy engineering data.
• Design components and assemblies with manufacturability, quality, safety and cost in mind.
• Work with machine shops, fabricators and other manufacturing partners.
• Review supplier proposals and resolve technical queries.
• Assist in selecting materials and equipment.
• Provide technical support to the sales team in response to customer enquiries.
• Compile, review and maintain product technical files.
• Produce user manuals, operating instructions and other technical documentation.

About the Role

Senex Recruitment is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for a specialist engineering company offering hybrid/remote working. The role combines home-based working with attendance at the company's Melksham, Wiltshire location for up to two days per week. Overnight accommodation will be provided when required. Applicants should be based within a reasonable travelling distance of Melksham, or be comfortable travelling there regularly - suitable locations may include Bath, Bristol, Swindon, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Devizes, Salisbury, Newbury, Cirencester, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Reading, Oxford and Southampton.

This is a varied position for a practical engineer who can manage the full design lifecycle, working with fabrication partners and machine shops, supporting supplier selection and purchasing, and maintaining technical documentation. You will report directly to an experienced Technical Director.

Key Responsibilities

• Developing, modifying and optimising mechanical designs using SolidWorks or a similar 3D CAD package
• Producing accurate production drawings, CAD models and associated engineering information
• Converting existing and legacy engineering data
• Designing components and assemblies with manufacturability, quality, safety and cost in mind
• Working with machine shops, steel fabricators and other manufacturing partners
• Reviewing supplier proposals and resolving technical or engineering queries
• Helping select materials, including steel, components and associated equipment
• Providing practical technical support to the sales team in response to customer enquiries
• Compiling, reviewing and maintaining product technical files
• Producing user manuals, operating instructions and other technical documentation

Skills and Experience Required

• Professional experience in mechanical design in a manufacturing or closely related engineering environment
• Strong 3D CAD skills, ideally using SolidWorks or another leading CAD software
• Experience producing detailed mechanical designs and manufacturing drawings
• An understanding of machining, welding and heavy steel fabrication
• Experience sourcing engineering materials and components, and managing external suppliers
• A BEng or MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Design or a related discipline, or equivalent, or an HNC/HND/apprenticeship with relevant industry experience
• Ability to attend the Melksham, Wiltshire site for up to two days per week and travel occasionally to suppliers and customers

Salary and Benefits

• Circa £55,000 per year
• Flexible hybrid arrangement, predominantly remote with up to two days per week at the Melksham facility
