Job summary

Bristol Industrial is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to adapt existing designs across a broad product range manufactured on site. You will work with the R&D team to propose process improvements and ensure designs meet technical, quality and cost requirements.

The role involves designing for manufacture, cross-functional collaboration, and providing technical support to R&D projects. A strong background in sheet metal is essential.

Qualifications

• 5 years experience in sheet metal manufacturing as a design engineer.
• Degree or HND in Mechanical Design or related Engineering discipline.
• Strong understanding of sheet metal processes, materials and tolerances.
• Experience with 3D CAD and generating 2D drawings, ideally SolidEdge.

Responsibilities

• Design updates of existing products from concept to manufacture, meeting customer, technical, functional, quality and cost requirements.
• Design for manufacture to enable efficient, repeatable and cost-effective production.
• Collaborate with NPD, Production Engineering, Quality, Purchasing and Marketing to implement designs.
• Provide technical support for R&D initiative projects and report progress to stakeholders.
• Identify, assess and mitigate design risks throughout updates.
• Ensure designs comply with engineering standards, legislation and company procedures.
• Support manufacturing for continuous improvement and cost reduction.

Mechanical Design Engineer

TheOpportunity:

Working within the existing design team of this quality British designed and manufactured product, the Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the adaption of existing designs on a really broad product range which is manufactured on site. In addition to your responsibilities as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will work closely with the wider R&D team making recommendations for process improvements.

The Role:

• Product design and development – Accountable for design updates of existing products from initial concept through to manufacture, ensuring designs meet customer, technical, functional, quality and cost requirements
• Design for manufacture – Ensure products are designed for efficient, repeatable and cost – effective manufacture and assembly
• Cross-functional collaboration – Work closely with new product development teams, Production Engineering, Quality, Purchasing and Marketing to ensure successful product design implementation
• Project support and delivery – Accountable for being the technical support for R&D initiative projects, ensuring that project deadlines are met, relevant stakeholders are involved and project progress is reported
• Design risk management – Identify, assess and mitigate design risks throughout existing product design updates
• Engineering standards – Ensure designs comply with engineering standards, legislation and company procedures, liaising with the new product development stakeholders
• Continuous improvement – Provide design support for manufacturing departments within the business for optimisation, continuous improvement and cost reduction projects

Preferred Skills:

• 5 years experience in a sheet metal or manufacturing business as a Design Engineer
• Degree or HND in Mechanical Design or a related Engineering discipline
• A strong understanding of sheet metal manufacturing processes, materials and tolerances would be highly beneficial as some of the role will also involve process improvement.
• Proven experience of working with 3D CAD packages and generating 2D technical drawings (ideally a knowledge of SolidEdge).
