Job summary

SC Engineering Basildon is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design and document mechanical components and assemblies for industrial machinery. You will produce detailed 2D drawings and 3D models, manage BOMs, and collaborate with manufacturing to ensure feasible, safe designs.

The role involves improving design standards, processing approvals, and supporting continuous improvement in the engineering department. Office-based, permanent full-time with a salary dependent on experience.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer in industrial machinery/manufacturing.
• Strong skills in 3D CAD and creating manufacturing drawings/BOMs.
• Knowledge of BS 8888 drawing standards and quality processes.
• Ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience with fabrications including sheet metal and machined parts.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Basildon, Essex

Salary: £35,000 – £55,000 per annum (DOE)

Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Working Pattern: Office-Based

The Opportunity

SC Engineering Group is recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of industrial machinery and equipment.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a busy engineering department, working on a variety of projects involving complex machinery, mechanical assemblies and bespoke equipment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing detailed mechanical designs and manufacturing documentation, whilst also supporting the development and improvement of engineering standards, processes and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and equipment layouts using 3D CAD software.
• Produce detailed manufacturing drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), assembly drawings and technical documentation.
• Support the design and development of industrial machinery and capital equipment.
• Maintain and update existing mechanical designs, standard machine builds and component libraries.
• Develop and improve mechanical design processes, drawing standards and engineering procedures.
• Manage drawing revisions, document control and engineering data using Autodesk Vault.
• Work closely with manufacturing, production and other engineering departments to ensure successful project delivery.
• Ensure designs are suitable for manufacture, assembly, installation and maintenance.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering department.
• Ensure all designs and documentation comply with relevant engineering and safety standards.

Skills & Experience Required

• Proven experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer within an industrial machinery, manufacturing or engineering environment.
• Experience using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
• Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and manufacturing processes.
• Experience designing fabricated, machined and sheet metal components.
• Ability to produce detailed 2D manufacturing drawings and 3D mechanical assemblies.
• Experience creating and managing BOMs and technical documentation.
• Good understanding of engineering drawing standards, including BS 8888.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Desirable Experience

• Experience designing special purpose machinery, automated equipment or conveyor systems.
• Knowledge of Autodesk Vault or similar PDM systems.
• Experience working on engineer-to-order or bespoke machinery projects.
• Understanding of airflow, ductwork or ATEX requirements.
• Experience using ERP/MRP systems such as Microsoft Business Central.
• Previous hands-on engineering, manufacturing or workshop experience.
