Job summary

MERITUS are recruiting for a Mechanical Architect to join our client to work on missile programmes from their site in Stevenage. The role is for an initial 6 month project but is very, very likely to extend.

The role requires SC clearance (or willingness to undergo) and will involve 3–4 days onsite per week. The position sits within an exciting, high-stakes missile programme with a demanding design and verification workload.

Qualifications

• Degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent with significant experience in mechanical design.
• Experience managing internal and sub-contract activities.
• Strong leadership and ability to set engineering vision.
• Experience missile mechanical design: static/dynamic analysis, design for environment, thermal management.
• Understanding broader engineering disciplines: aerodynamics, testability, production.
• Experience developing proving logic and compliance evidence toward Certificates of Design.
• Experience across full product life cycle.
• Ability to influence senior managers and stakeholders.
• Willingness to travel within UK and Europe.
• Proficiency with common IT systems (Outlook, Excel).

Responsibilities

• Establish the Missile Airframe Task Requirements Specification (TRS).
• Manage the mechanical interface with the launcher.
• Manage Mechanical & Thermal Interfaces across the Missile.
• Define the optimum mechanical architecture for all variants of the missile.
• Implement GMA (Generic Missile Architecture) policies for modularity & reuse.
• Develop proving logic for validation of the Airframe.
• Ensure mechanical compliance to the Airframe TRS for certificate of design.
• Interface with and manage customer expectations throughout development.
• Produce Statements of Work and plans for activities within their sphere of responsibility.
• Direct technical supervision of engineers within their team and indirect management of engineers in the extended project team.
• Control budgets, manage personal workload and identify resource needs.

MECHANICAL ARCHITECT - INSIDE IR35 - £60 PER HOUR - UMBRELLA - STEVENAGE (COULD CONSIDER BOLTON) - 6 MONTHS - SC CLEARED (OR WILLING TO UNDERGO) - SINGLE STAGE INTERVIEW PROCESS - 3 / 4 DAYS ONSITE PER WEEK NEEDED

The role is responsible for the delivery of the missile mechanical architecture requirements and typical responsibilities include:

• Establishing the Missile Airframe Task Requirements Specification (TRS) to ensure a structured & coherent mechanical response to the overall Missile TRS
• Management of the mechanical interface with the launcher
• Management of Mechanical & Thermal Interfaces across the Missile
• Defining the optimum mechanical architecture for all variants of the missile, ensuring the mechanical architecture and interfaces meet requirements
• Implementation of GMA (Generic Missile Architecture) Policies to ensure Modularity & Reuse objectives are achieved
• Development of the overall proving logic for the validation of the Airframe
• Ensuring mechanical compliance to the Airframe TRS for missile certificate of design
• Interface with and manage customer expectations throughout the development process
• Producing Statements of Work and plans for activities within their sphere of responsibility
• Direct technical supervision of engineers within their team and indirect management of engineers in the extended project team
• Controlling assigned budgets, managing personal workload and identifying any further resource needs

Skillset/experience required:

Who and what we are looking for from you?

• Educated to degree level or an equivalent qualification having obtained significant experience of mechanical engineering
• Ability to technically manage internal & sub-contract activities
• Strong leadership skills, able to establish a clear engineering vision
• Good knowledge & experience of missile mechanical design, including: o Static & Dynamic Analysis o Design for Environment o Thermal Management
• Good understanding of broader engineering disciplines, including: o Aerodynamics o Testability o Production
• Experience developing proving logic and managing the generation of compliance evidence towards Certificates of Design
• Experience across the full Product Life Cycle
• Ability to influence senior managers and other stakeholders
• Strong interpersonal and well developed communication skills (written & verbal)
• Willingness to travel within UK and Europe
• General competency with common IT systems (Outlook, Excell etc)
