What the role looks like:
As a Maths Tutor at HMP Peterborough, you will plan, develop, implement, and evaluate activities and courses to help prisoners achieve their functional skills qualification in Maths. You will monitor attendance, achievement, and progression, while addressing negative behaviors and boosting prisoners’ self-esteem through a self-directed learning approach. Many prisoners may have undiagnosed learning difficulties or neurodivergence and often have lost confidence in education. We need someone committed to empowering each prisoner with the desire and ability to learn more.
Working in a prison setting offers year-round education without term-based constraints, providing flexibility for leave throughout the year. Smaller class sizes, typically 6 to 12 students, allow for a learner-centric approach tailored to individual needs. Additionally, learner files remain on-site, and daily administrative time means no home marking, enabling tutors to focus on in-class instruction and student support.
This role is both challenging and rewarding, as you will directly impact prisoners' futures by equipping them with tools for stability after release.
