Job overview

An exciting opportunity has opened for the role of the Maternity Support Worker within our maternity departments at Princess Royal University Hospital. The role involves supporting the midwifery teams to provide individualised care to birthing people and babies throughout their maternity journey and facilitating a positive experience.

We are looking for applicants with experience in working in the maternity care setting who can work independently undertaking allocated tasks whilst remaining under the direct/indirect supervision of a registered midwife.

Please only apply to this role if you are a qualified Maternity Support Worker and have completed the Level 3 Maternity Support Worker qualification or Maternity Support Worker Foundation degree pathway.

Candidates would be supported to undertake the specific competencies relating to their role including the Care Certificate and competencies in the skills passports.

The post holder may be rotated within the maternity departments and will be expected to work pro rota on shift pattern, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Suitable candidates for the role have excellent communication skills, are caring, sensitive and friendly, can work within the multidisciplinary team, prioritize tasks, manage workload, adapt to changing requirements, and maintain a positive approach to work.

Main duties of the job
  1. To assist under supervision in the delivery of fundamental nursing and midwifery care in liaison with the multidisciplinary team.
  2. To contribute to the implementation and progression of a range of women/birthing people treatment and care programmes as delegated by a registered healthcare practitioner, reporting back on progress.
  3. To work in partnership with midwives and members of the multi-disciplinary team in providing clinical, practical, social, and environmental support within the hospital and community setting.
  4. To assist with clinical duties to ensure the effective running of the ward/department.
  5. Provide day-to-day supervision and coordination of junior staff acting both as a leader and role model for care assistants (band 2).
  6. The post holder will provide person-centred care to the birthing person/families by developing a positive relationship to understand their care needs.
  7. In-house induction and mandatory training updates would be provided annually.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
  1. Community antenatal clinic – antenatal classes – postnatal home visits.
  2. To prepare and maintain the clinical environment, ensuring stock is available for all clinical sessions.
  3. To meet, greet and orientate women/birthing people to the clinical area when they attend the antenatal clinic.
  4. To manage own caseload of allocated tasks under the supervision of the midwife.
  5. Ability to support the midwife with home visits to complete postnatal care of the women/birthing people and baby independently.
Administrative and clerical duties
  1. To assist with clerical and ward administrative duties, including data management and booking transport.
  2. To provide clear and effective information and communication, both verbally and in writing.
Education and Training
  1. To identify and support your own development needs, completing a competency document within 6 months of commencing the role.
  2. To ensure attendance at mandatory study days and training as required by the ward/departmental manager.
Leadership
  1. To adhere to the National Code of Conduct for clinical support workers.
  2. To manage an agreed workload with supervision and support from colleagues and senior staff.
General
  1. The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues.
  2. To observe the rules, policies, procedures, and standards of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Person specification
Education
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English, or equivalent.
  • Maternity Support Worker Foundation degree or evidence of further education in maternity.
  • Care Certificate.
  • NVQ level 3 in Health Care or equivalent.
Skills/Experience
  • Experience of working within maternity or similar setting.
  • Able to talk to people about sensitive issues in a supportive manner.
  • Work well with other members of the team, being kind and considerate.
