Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and committed person to join the Infant Feeding team at Walsall Manor Hospital.

The post holder will be working as part of the Walsall Manor Hospital (Maternity Directorate) Infant Feeding Team, contributing to all aspects of the service, but focusing on working on Ward 25 and within the community, working closely with midwives and maternity support workers to assist in achievement of full Baby Friendly Initiative Accreditation for Walsall Maternity and Neonatal Units.

Main duties of the job

The Infant Feeding Maternity Team Support Worker (IFMTSW) will work together with the members of the maternity and neonatal team to provide a high standard of care to women and their families, offering infant feeding support and information.

The role involves clinical work with families on the postnatal ward and within the community to support their infant feeding goals, participation in Baby Friendly staff and family audits, and involvement in delivering training to staff and attending conferences.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Provide infant feeding support and information to enable informed choices.
  • Deliver high-quality care following Trust policies and guidelines.
  • Observe women and babies, report concerns to responsible staff.
  • Support discharge planning and emergency safeguarding actions.
  • Answer calls and refer to appropriate professionals when deviations occur.
  • Provide lactation and breastfeeding support per guidance.
  • Participate in audits and training related to infant feeding standards.
  • Support women who formula feed, providing appropriate information and guidance.
  • Assist families transitioning from tube feeds to breastfeeding, developing feeding plans.
  • Exercise compassionate counselling and information skills.
  • Safekeep families’ belongings, manage waste, and maintain a safe environment.
  • Monitor and restock supplies, maintain equipment, and ensure adequate stocks.
  • Maintain accurate records, participate in service improvement, and clinical incident reporting.
  • Be competent in neonatal blood glucose monitoring and alternative feeding methods.

Personal Responsibilities

  • Maintain professional conduct, punctuality, and team collaboration.
  • Present a positive attitude and stay updated with Trust policies.
  • Attend mandatory training on lifting, fire safety, and life support.
Location

Based in the Maternity Unit at Walsall Manor Hospital, with community work including health centres, children’s centres, and women’s homes.
