Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) invites applications for a Year in Industry Placement in Materials Science at Aldermaston, near Reading. The 12-month placement starts 2 August 2027 and offers £24,500 per annum plus benefits.

• Degree in Materials Science or Chemistry.
• Interest in materials development and analytical chemistry.

Responsibilities

• Support life cycle of warhead materials and technologies.
• Develop foam and aerogel materials for laser target applications.
• Analyse chemical, physical and X-ray CT properties of materials.
• Develop analytical methodologies for qualitative and quantitative assessment of materials.
• Perform experiments to understand material behaviour and engage with stakeholders.
