Job summary

Rolls-Royce in Bristol is recruiting a Materials Engineer for a full-time, hybrid role combining office and site work. You will contribute to Defence engine projects, advising on materials selection, testing, and performance improvements.

The role offers collaboration across Materials Applications and Capability Acquisition teams, exposure to cutting-edge materials, and opportunities to develop expertise while working with suppliers and universities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science/Engineering or equivalent technical capability.
  • Ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking to technical problems.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication across the business.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and expert materials advice across Defence Bristol programmes.
  • Support design of test programmes and analysis of test data.
  • Investigate engineering development, production manufacturing and in-service issues with structured analytical approach.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects.
  • Provide technical materials advice with focus on new design and technology development.
  • Lead technologies through the TRL journey including novel materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Evaluate effects of manufacturing processes on material performance.
  • Support design of test programmes, analysis of test data and databases for future designs.
  • Develop, write, and maintain materials and process specifications.

We currently have exciting opportunities for talented and enthusiastic Materials Engineers working in both our Materials Applications and Capability Acquisition teams. The roles are based in Bristol and will primarily support the Defence engine projects.
The Materials Applications team is responsible for delivering design, development, manufacturing, testing and in-service Materials support to the Defence engine projects. The Materials Applications engineer role provides the opportunity to gain experience of the materials, processes, components and products produced by Rolls-Royce and its suppliers as well as developing key skills and competencies for further personal development.
The Capability Acquisition team is responsible for developing cutting-edge materials technologies for the next generation of Rolls-Royce products. You will join a dynamic global Materials team and work in an environment that will allow you growth in developing your depth as a materials engineer and breadth through engagement and collaboration with other engineering disciplines across Rolls-Royce. Externally to Rolls-Royce you will manage effective working relationships with our suppliers, supply chain partners and University Technology Centres.
What you will be doing:

Materials Applications:
  • To provide technical and expert materials advice across the Defence Bristol programmes
  • Support design of test programmes and analysis of test programme data
  • Investigate engineering development, production manufacturing and in-service issues using a structured analytical approach and presenting findings clearly and authoritatively
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects

Capability Acquisition:
  • Providing technical materials advice with a focus on new design and new technology development.
  • Leading technologies through the TRL journey including novel materials, manufacturing processes, models and analysis methods.
  • Evaluate the effects of manufacturing processes on material performance.
  • Support design of test programmes, analysis of test data and generating databases for supporting future product designs.
  • Developing, writing, and maintaining materials and process specifications.

Position qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s degree, Master\'s or PhD in Materials Science/Engineering or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
  • An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking to a range of technical problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral and the ability to build good working relationships across the business.

Preferred requirements:
  • Knowledge of the gas turbine and its components

To work for the Rolls-Royce Defence business, an individual has to hold a Security Check clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you do not currently already have this in place.
