Job description

Tasks

• Scrutinise and challenge client's technical standards relating to:
• Conventional Structural materials relating to the project requirements.
• Tunnel Linings; precast segments, SCL, TBM grouts etc.
• Geotechnical materials including reuse of tunnel arisings.
• Sustainable Materials and Material durability.
• Work in collaboration with the Design House to influence fundamental material choices included in the Scheme Design.
• Review and challenge materials specification prepared by the Design House.
• Reduce use of virgin material through identification and implementation of materials to be reused and recycled.
• Demonstrate how changes proposed to Client and Design House specifications will result in savings against the Stage 2 target price.
• Work with the Carbon specialists, Environmental leads, procurement and BREEAM assessors to meet project requirements on responsible sourcing of sustainable materials.
• Assist the Technical Discipline Leads (e.g. the Tunnelling Manager) to evaluate material science innovations in their field.
• Be familiar with, and demonstrate commitment to the requirements of the Health & Safety and Environmental Policies.
• Ensure own efforts are coordinated with the Construction Team, QA team, Cost Control and Design Management Team.
• Maintain and develop used Material Approval Systems.
• Manage material approvals and support site teams in raising them (training, consultation, etc.).
• Support site teams and QA team in identifying, evaluating and closing out of defects and nonconformities.
• Support site teams in managing / analysis of material test results.
• Support site teams in compiling / reviewing material data for handover documents.
• Manage, mentor and develop junior team members and graduate materials engineers.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Materials Science or similar.
• Strong experience in Microsoft packages(Word, Excel).
• Extensive technical knowledge of construction materials and best practices.
• Previous experience working in a similar capacity on major projects.
• Familiarity with environmental assessment schemes (CEEQUAL, BREEAM Infrastructure).
• Training in Health and Safety Management.
