Job description

MERITUS Talent is working with one of Europe's leading weapons systems manufacturers to recruit a Laboratory Technician for their Materials team. This is a contract role paying GBP40 per hour inside IR35.
Materials & Process Laboratory Technician - Stevenage - Contract - GBP40 per hour via umbrella - Fully Onsite - Optional compressed week

The Materials team consists of a federated UK/France integrated team based in Mechanical Engineering, operating with a common process set and links to other materials teams across the business. We have a wide range of test facilities and specialist knowledge within materials used across the business.

The Materials group supports all areas of the business in matters related to materials and processes, with expertise in metallic, non-metallic, composite, and other materials science areas.

We achieve this by:

  1. Providing technical guidance and approval in the selection, characterization, and use of materials and related processes across all projects.
  2. Offering materials and processes consultancy for the Government and MoD.
  3. Representing the company on international, government, MoD, trade body, strategic steering bodies, and standard committees.
  4. Supporting REACH and RoHS compliance.
  5. Being the first point of contact for failure investigations and forensic engineering.
  6. Providing guidance on the use and control of hazardous materials.
  7. Offering solutions for obsolescence issues.
  8. Undertaking technical assessment and validation of supplier/sub-contractor processes and manufactured parts.
  9. Providing technical support for in-country (offset) design and manufacture.
  10. Conducting quality assessments of bought-in items.
Responsibilities:

Assessing a wide range of materials including metals, paints, adhesives, composites, and related processes. Familiarity with general lab equipment is required; experience with XRF, FTIR, SEM, and EDX is beneficial but not essential. A strong background in materials chemistry is desirable.

Preparing reports, interpreting engineering drawings and specifications, and using IT systems such as Word, Excel, and Access.

Supporting all aspects of the materials lab, including failure investigations, materials selection, supply chain support, first article inspection report reviews, material inspection and characterization, and other activities.

Supporting the generation or assessment of compliance data such as REACH, RoHS, or environmental aspects of engineering designs.

Skillset/Experience Required:
  • Manufacturing laboratory experience.
  • Assessment of materials and components to established international standards, including DEF STANs.
  • Experience supporting the selection, procurement, and manufacturing of engineering parts or components.
  • Knowledge of non-metallic material production and processing, including paints and adhesives.
