As a Materials and Process Engineer within our Mechanical Engineering team at Denham, you’ll help ensure the materials and processes behind life-saving aerospace technology meet the highest standards of quality, safety and performance.

From material selection and process specifications to defect investigations and continuous improvement, your expertise will help maintain the integrity of products designed to perform in some of the most extreme, safety-critical environments.

Direct Impact, Global Scale. Life-Saving Mission.

At Martin-Baker, the work we do matters. We design, manufacture and support life-saving equipment used by aircrew around the world. Our products operate in demanding environments, where quality, reliability and attention to detail are critical.

We’re proud of our long history in aerospace and defence, while remaining focused on the future. Joining Martin-Baker means becoming part of a business with a clear purpose, strong engineering capability and a long-term commitment to its people, products and customers.

Whether you work in engineering, operations, commercial, finance, supply chain or support functions, your contribution helps deliver equipment that protects lives. It is challenging work, but it is also meaningful, and with over 7,700 lives saved, it gives our people the opportunity to be part of something with real impact.

The Opportunity

As a Materials and Process Engineer, you’ll join our Mechanical Engineering team, reporting to the Principal Materials and Process Engineer. You’ll contribute to the management and control of the materials and processes used across Martin-Baker, ensuring they comply with customer, regulatory and legal requirements through our Quality Management System.

You’ll work across a diverse range of materials and manufacturing processes, providing technical expertise and practical support to teams across the business. From developing and maintaining technical specifications to supporting material reviews, defect investigations and engineering changes, you’ll play an important role in ensuring the continued quality and performance of our products.

This is an opportunity to apply your materials and process knowledge within a highly regulated aerospace environment, working closely with internal teams, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to find effective, technically robust solutions.

What You’ll Do
  • Compile new and maintain existing Process Specifications (PSs), Martin-Baker Material Specifications (MBMSs) and Martin-Baker Fabric Descriptions (MBFDs).
  • Generate and maintain materials and substances within the Materials Management Database.
  • Provide technical support on materials and process-related queries from internal and external stakeholders, including customers, vendors and subcontractors.
  • Support material obsolescence management and act as an advisor on hazardous materials and processes.
  • Provide technical support for defect investigations, including consideration of materials, processes and testing requirements.
  • Peer review the introduction and modification of P numbers, supporting the control of standard parts, materials, substances and source-controlled parts and assemblies.
  • Provide technical input into Material Review Applications (MRAs) relating to materials and processes.
  • Act as a technical resource, using scientific interpretation and engineering judgement to provide advice and support across the business.
  • Support engineering change applications relating to materials and processes as a Subject Matter Expert.
  • Produce clear, accurate technical documentation, reports and presentations to communicate engineering requirements and findings.
  • Plan and organise your own workload in line with agreed work packages, while identifying opportunities for continual improvement across Martin-Baker products and processes.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and business stakeholders to achieve the optimum technical solution.
What We’re Looking For
  • HNC/BTEC or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials or an appropriate science-based discipline.
  • General knowledge of materials science and engineering, particularly materials commonly used within the aerospace industry, including aluminium alloys, CRES, steels, copper and copper alloys.
  • Knowledge of heat treatment processes, including annealing, solution treatment, artificial ageing and precipitation hardening.
  • Understanding of heat-treatment equipment and associated testing, including hardness, tensile and conductivity testing.
  • Knowledge of finishing processes and associated considerations such as hydrogen embrittlement, wear, corrosion, dissimilar materials and post-finishing testing.
  • General knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication processes, ideally within an aerospace or similarly regulated environment. This may include adhesive bonding and sealing, lubrication, fastening, welding, brazing and soldering.
  • Good understanding of the specifications and standards applicable to materials used within aerospace, with the ability to identify suitable alternatives where materials become obsolete or unavailable.
  • Experience creating and delivering technical documentation and presentations.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with PLM systems or materials/data management systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret technical information and provide practical engineering advice.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to consult with colleagues, suppliers, customers and other business stakeholders.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to manage your own workload, take ownership and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Experience within aerospace, defence or another highly regulated industry is desirable.
  • Knowledge of US MIL-STD / UK Defence Standards is desirable.
  • Understanding of textile properties, testing, manufacturing and finishing processes is desirable.
  • Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety requirements, including REACH and UK HSE requirements, is desirable.
