Job summary

The University of Manchester is seeking a motivated Technical Specialist (Mass Spectrometry & Separations) to join the School of Chemistry. You will oversee and operate MS and chromatography instrumentation, delivering timely analytical results and robust data interpretation to support research and teaching across the university.

You will lead and develop junior staff, ensure safety compliance, and collaborate with researchers.

Qualifications

• Degree in science or engineering or equivalent technical experience.
• Hands-on experience with mass spectrometry and chromatography equipment.
• Ability to interpret complex data and report findings.
• Ability to lead and deliver technical operations.
• Strong knowledge of health and safety in a science/engineering environment.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality MS service including accurate mass data (ESI, APCI), MALDI-MS.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain chromatography systems and hyphenated MS instruments.
• Collaborate with academic staff to interpret and report data.
• Supervise and develop junior staff and technical apprentices.
• Ensure health and safety compliance and risk assessments.
