Membershipbespoke is seeking a Maritime Technical & Policy Manager to join our shore-based team in the UK. The role applies seagoing knowledge to technical projects, policy development and industry engagement.

You will coordinate expert groups, draft policy materials and support seminars and events while developing your policy, research and stakeholder engagement skills.

Are you an experienced Maritime Professional considering your next career move ashore?

Our client, a well-established membership organisation, is seeking a maritime professional to join its team as a Technical & Policy Manager.

This is an excellent opportunity to use your seagoing knowledge in a varied shore-based position encompassing technical projects, industry engagement, research, policy development and professional events.

You do not need to have previously worked in a dedicated policy role. Your practical understanding of vessel operations, safety, engineering or regulatory requirements will be highly valued. You will receive the opportunity to develop your policy, research, stakeholder engagement and management experience while remaining closely connected to the maritime profession.

The Role

Working with experienced industry professionals, technical experts and volunteers, you will:

• Apply your operational maritime knowledge to technical and policy projects.
• Coordinate specialist committees, expert panels and industry working groups.
• Help turn practical industry experience into useful reports, guidance and policy positions.
• Research and monitor technical, regulatory and operational developments.
• Assess how emerging issues could affect maritime professionals and the wider sector.
• Prepare meeting agendas, briefing papers and supporting documentation.
• Manage technical projects and workstreams from initial planning through to delivery.
• Work with subject-matter experts to review and quality-assure technical content.
• Build relationships with members, volunteers, regulators, academics and industry representatives.
• Represent the organisation at meetings, conferences, forums and working groups.
• Contribute to seminars, workshops, training programmes and professional events.
• Draft and review reports, articles, consultation responses and briefing papers.
• Work with communications colleagues to share technical insight and thought leadership.
• Line manage and support the development of a junior team member.

About You

This role could suit someone currently working at sea who is ready to establish a shore-based career, or someone who has already made the transition and is looking for a broader professional opportunity.

You will ideally bring:

• Meaningful seagoing experience within the commercial maritime sector.
• A practical understanding of vessel operations, engineering, safety, compliance or maritime regulation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to explain complex technical matters clearly to different audiences.
• Experience preparing reports, procedures, technical documentation, incident reviews or briefing materials.
• Good organisational and project management skills.
• The confidence to engage with senior maritime professionals and technical specialists.
• An interest in research, policy development and industry engagement.
• The ability to manage several priorities and deadlines.
• Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office 365.

Experience of committees, working groups, professional bodies, regulatory organisations or volunteer-led activities would be advantageous but is not essential.

A relevant maritime, engineering or technical qualification is preferred. A Certificate of Competency or membership of an appropriate professional body would also be valuable.
