Job summary

Electus Recruitment Solutions in Bristol is seeking a Principal Systems Safety Engineer / Safety Engineering Lead to manage and develop a team delivering safety engineering across complex maritime defence systems, with hybrid working and on-site Bristol days.

You will stay technically active, provide direction on hazard analyses, risk assessments and safety-case development, and work with systems engineering to embed safety into product design.

Qualifications

• Strong background in systems safety or product safety.
• Experience applying safety engineering to complex equipment.
• Knowledge of hazard analysis, functional failure analysis, fault tree analysis, and safety case development.
• Experience leading or mentoring engineers.
• Understanding of how safety supports systems development, design assurance and certification.
• Familiarity with safety standards, ideally Defence Standard 00-056.
• Strong communication skills and ability to challenge decisions constructively.
• Experience in Defence or Maritime preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and support safety engineers across multiple programmes.
• Provide technical direction on hazard analysis, risk assessment and safety engineering activities.
• Oversee development of safety cases, hazard analyses and supporting evidence.
• Collaborate with systems engineering and design teams to influence safety decisions.
• Ensure safety engineering is integrated into engineering processes, not just compliance.
• Identify opportunities to improve safety engineering methods and practices.
