Job summary

Ascension Island Government seeks a Marine Mechanic to maintain and repair marine engines, including outboard motors and Sea Rescue craft, for AIG and its service users. The role includes supporting Coxswain duties and training to qualify accordingly.

Responsibilities include diagnostics, servicing schedules, equipment operation on pontoons and vessels, and joint efforts with the Marine Team Leader to ensure vessel safety and service readiness.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years' experience as a mechanic, working with marine engines and outboard motors.
• Sound practical knowledge of mechanical diesel and petrol engines, including marine and outboard engines.
• Must have or be willing to work towards NVQ Level 3 Mechanics, or certified competent by experience from working as a mechanic on marine and outboard engines.
• Willingness to support Coxswain duties and undertake training to do so.
• A clean and valid driver's license of Classes A to J4.
• Working knowledge of health and safety in the workplace, particularly within a mechanical workshop.
• Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and communication with colleagues, managers and customers.

Responsibilities

• Maintain marine engines and Sea Rescue craft, including servicing and repairs.
• Carry out electrical fault-finding with diagnostic equipment.
• Implement a service/maintenance schedule for marine craft engines and outboard motors.
• Attend marine craft engine training and diagnostics training on outboard motors.
• Operate pontoon, passenger launch, dinghy, cranes, forklifts and other plant used by the Marine Team.
• Assist with Coxswain duties and training where required.
