Job summary

Stena Line is seeking an experienced Marine Pilot to join the UK Harbour Authorities team, based in Holyhead with travel to Fishguard and Loch Ryan. You will oversee pilotage and navigational safety across multiple ports, advising Masters and coordinating with Port Control to ensure secure vessel movements.

You will contribute to the Marine Safety Management System and continuous improvement of navigational standards, while maintaining your local knowledge and competency in dynamic,

Qualifications

• Chief officer certificate of competency with 5 years pilot experience.
• Minimum STCW Master Unlimited (Deck) Certificate.
• Authorised Marine Pilot or demonstrable ship-handling experience.
• Strong Bridge Resource Management, pilotage and risk management knowledge.
• Knowledge of Pilotage Act and Port Marine Safety Code.
• Experience in busy port environments.
• Good communication with vessel crews and stakeholders.
• Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends/holidays.
• ENG1 medical certificate.
• Ability to transfer to/from vessels by pilot ladder.

Responsibilities

• Conduct acts of pilotage within harbour limits in accordance with procedures and standards.
• Provide navigational advice to vessel Masters during berthing and movements.
• Maintain situational awareness of vessel traffic, weather, berth status and risks.
• Coordinate with Port Control, Masters, towage and teams to ensure safe operations.
• Challenge operations when safety standards are not met.
• Contribute to pilotage procedures, standards and guidance.
• Assist in navigational risk assessments and marine investigations.
• Provide marine technical advice on ship handling and port capability.
• Support Marine Safety Management System improvements and alignment with practice.
• Maintain pilotage competency and local knowledge per Harbour Authority requirements.
