Job summary

BD is a leading global medical technology company in the United Kingdom, seeking a Manufacturing Technical Leader in Plymouth. You will oversee shift-based technical staff, drive safety, quality, delivery and cost objectives, and develop a competence-driven team while implementing improvements in shift-based processes and working methods.

You will manage Engineering Technicians and a wider technical team, focusing on succession planning and career development, with emphasis on Lean principles

Qualifications

• Minimum NVQ Level 2 in an Engineering discipline, with CMI Level 3 or above, and at least 3 years of leadership experience.
• Proven leadership experience, particularly in driving improvements in people, culture, and processes.
• Familiarity with Lean methodologies is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Maintain machinery to its original standards, aiming to improve MTBF.
• Enhance problem-solving skills to reduce MTTR and promote safe working practices.
• Oversee the technical escalation process, ensuring root causes are resolved to minimise overall escalations.
• Lead and develop Shift Engineers and Technicians by identifying skill gaps and driving development plans.
• Manage the technician skills matrix to monitor and improve team performance.
• Implement standard work improvements for technical processes.
• Collaborate with Asset Care Team and Process Engineers to enhance line performance.
• Develop a succession plan and career pathways for team members.

Job Description

As a Manufacturing Technical Leader, reporting to the Manufacturing Unit Leader, you will oversee shift-based technical staff and ensure their performance aligns with safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives. This leadership role focuses on enhancing the technical team’s effectiveness by developing their competencies and implementing improvements in shift-based processes and working methods. You will be directly responsible for a team of Engineering Technicians, with an additional team of Technicians under their guidance.

Responsibilities

• Maintain machinery to its original standards, aiming to improve Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF).
• Enhance problem-solving skills to reduce Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and promote safe working practices.
• Oversee the technical escalation process, ensuring root causes are resolved to minimise overall escalations.
• Lead and develop Shift Engineers and Technicians by identifying skill gaps and driving development plans.
• Manage the technician skills matrix to monitor and improve team performance.
• Implement standard work improvements for technical processes.
• Collaborate with Asset Care Team and Process Engineers to enhance line performance.
• Develop a succession plan and career pathways for team members.

Preferred Requirements:

• Minimum NVQ Level 2 in an Engineering discipline, with CMI Level 3 or above, and at least 3 years of leadership experience.
• Proven leadership experience, particularly in driving improvements in people, culture, and processes.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to lead by example.
• Experience in high-speed automated manufacturing is preferred.
• Familiarity with Lean methodologies is advantageous.

Salaryrange for the role: £48,000 to £54,000 + benefits.
