Job summary

Advantage Resourcing UK Ltd in Huddersfield is seeking a Senior Manufacturing Engineer for a hybrid, full-time permanent role in the Aerospace/Defence sector. You will bridge Design Engineering, machine operators and the supply chain to ensure manufacturability and first-time-right production.

You will lead PFMEAs, define critical characteristics, evaluate gear and rotating components, and drive improvements through AS9100/ISO 9001 compliant processes from prototype to series production.

Qualifications

• Bachelors or Masters in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent).
• Knowledge of rotating component manufacturing (turning, boring, milling, heat treatment, gear hobbing, shaping, grinding).
• Proven background in Aerospace, Defence, or Heavy Power Transmission / Gearbox Manufacturing.
• Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and challenge design to optimize cost, lead time and yield.
• Strong knowledge of AS9100 / ISO 9001, 8D / 5-Why RCA, PFMEA and control-plan development.

Responsibilities

• Act as SME for gear hobbing, shaping, profile grinding and finish grinding between Design Engineering and Machine Operators.
• Bridge manufacturing/assembly and design engineering; provide manufacturability feedback and grant sign-offs at design gates.
• Lead PFMEAs, define critical characteristics, support FAI strategies, ensure AS9100 / ISO 9001 compliance.
• Conduct make-versus-buy evaluations and assess external supplier capabilities via audits and MRR.
• Develop automated post-process measurement programmes and train teams on digital metrology.
• Apply heat treatment knowledge to design bespoke methods and tooling with regulatory compliance.

Senior Manufacturing Engineer

Certain Advantage are working with a company who sits within the Aerospace Defence Industry. Due to increase in work, they are actively seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer / Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Gear & Rotating Component Manufacturing to bridge the gap between Design Engineering, Machine Tool Operators, and our Global Supply Chain.

The Role

In this pivotal technical role, where you will act as the authority on gear profile generation, power transmission systems, and precision machining. You will drive "Right First Time" manufacturability, lead PFMEAs, define manufacturing routings, evaluate machine tool capabilities, and support complex aerospace and defence programmes from prototype through to series production.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the Subject Matter Expert for gear hobbing, shaping, profile grinding, and finish grinding (journals, cones, thrust faces), providing expert guidance between Design Engineering and Machine Operators
• Act as the primary technical bridge between manufacturing/assembly and design engineering. Provide manufacturability feedback, evaluate GD&T/tolerances, and grant manufacturing sign-offs at design gates (PDR, CDR, release to manufacture).
• Lead PFMEAs (process mapping, risk mitigation, control plans), define critical characteristics, support FAI (AS9102) strategies, and ensure full compliance with AS9100 / ISO 9001 quality standards.
• Conduct make-versus-buy evaluations and assess external supplier machining capabilities (multi-axis, gear cutting, deep hole drilling, heat treatment, NDT) via technical audits and Manufacturing Readiness Reviews (MRR).
• Develop automated post-process measurement programmes, analyze data sets, and train production and quality teams on digital measurement methodologies.
• Apply a deep understanding of heat treatment processes and design bespoke methods/tooling ensuring compliance with Machinery Safety regulations.

Qualifications / Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent industrial experience).
• Knowledge of rotating component manufacturing (turning, boring, milling, heat treatment, gear hobbing, shaping, grinding).
• Proven background in Aerospace, Defence, or Heavy Power Transmission / Gearbox Manufacturing
• Knowledge of rotating component manufacturing (turning, boring, milling, heat treatment, gear hobbing, shaping, grinding).
• Ability to interpret complex technical drawings, create stage drawings, and challenge design assumptions to optimize cost, lead time, and yield.
