Job summary

Certain Advantage are partnering with a company in the Aerospace- Defence sector to recruit an experienced Manufacturing Engineer / SME in Gear & Rotating Component Manufacturing. You will act as the authority on gear profiles and precision machining, driving Right First Time manufacturability and leading PFMEAs.

You will liaise between Design Engineering, Machine Tool Operators and the Global Supply Chain, supporting prototypes through to series production with focus on GD&T, tolerance

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent industrial experience).
• Experience in rotating component manufacturing and precision machining.
• Background in Aerospace, Defence, or Heavy Power Transmission / Gearbox Manufacturing.
• Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and GD&T tolerances.

Responsibilities

• Serve as SME for gear hobbing, shaping, profile grinding, and finish grinding; guide between design and operators.
• Bridge between manufacturing/assembly and design engineering; provide manufacturability feedback and sign-offs at design gates (PDR, CDR, release to manufacture).
• Lead PFMEAs, define critical characteristics, support FAI strategies, ensure AS9100/ISO 9001 compliance.
• Conduct make-versus-buy evaluations and assess external supplier machining capabilities via technical audits and MRR.
• Apply heat treatment knowledge and design bespoke tooling ensuring compliance with Machinery Safety regulations.

Job description

Certain Advantage are working with a company who sits within the Aerospace - Defence Industry. Due to increase in work, they are actively seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer / Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Gear & Rotating Component Manufacturing to bridge the gap between Design Engineering, Machine Tool Operators, and our Global Supply Chain.

The Role

In this pivotal technical role, where you will act as the authority on gear profile generation, power transmission systems, and precision machining.

You will drive "Right First Time" manufacturability, lead PFMEAs, define manufacturing routings, evaluate machine tool capabilities, and support complex aerospace and defence programmes from prototype through to series production.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the Subject Matter Expert for gear hobbing, shaping, profile grinding, and finish grinding (journals, cones, thrust faces), providing expert guidance between Design Engineering and Machine Operators
• Act as the primary technical bridge between manufacturing/assembly and design engineering. Provide manufacturability feedback, evaluate GD&T/tolerances, and grant manufacturing sign-offs at design gates (PDR, CDR, release to manufacture).
• Lead PFMEAs (process mapping, risk mitigation, control plans), define critical characteristics, support FAI (AS9102) strategies, and ensure full compliance with AS9100 / ISO 9001 quality standards.
• Conduct make-versus-buy evaluations and assess external supplier machining capabilities (multi-axis, gear cutting, deep hole drilling, heat treatment, NDT) via technical audits and Manufacturing Readiness Reviews (MRR).
• Apply a deep understanding of heat treatment processes and design bespoke methods/tooling ensuring compliance with Machinery Safety regulations.

Qualifications / Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent industrial experience).
• Knowledge of rotating component manufacturing (turning, boring, milling, heat treatment, gear hobbing, shaping, grinding).
• Proven background in Aerospace, Defence, or Heavy Power Transmission / Gearbox Manufacturing
• Knowledge of rotating component manufacturing (turning, boring, milling, heat treatment, gear hobbing, shaping, grinding).
• Ability to interpret complex technical drawings, create stage drawings, and challenge design assumptions to optimize cost, lead time, and yield.
• Strong working knowledge of AS9100 / ISO 9001, root cause analysis (8D, 5-Why), PFMEA, and control plan development.
