Job description

Manual Machine Operator

£35,000 - £40,000 per annum

Glasgow

Monday - Friday | Day Shift | Full-time, Permanent

Are you an experienced Manual Machinist with horizontal boring experience looking for a stable, long-term opportunity within a highly skilled engineering workshop?

We're recruiting for a Manual Machine Operator to join an established engineering organisation in Glasgow, working as part of an experienced workshop team on the machining of complex mechanical and propulsion-related components.

Horizontal boring experience is a key requirement for this position. We're particularly interested in speaking with machinists who are confident operating traditional/manual machinery and can work accurately from technical drawings and specifications.

Experience within the marine or maritime sector would be highly advantageous, although candidates from other heavy engineering, manufacturing or precision machining environments will also be considered.

The Role

As a Manual Machine Operator, you'll be responsible for machining a range of components to the required specifications and quality standards. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Operating manual machining equipment, with a particular focus on horizontal boring
  • Using manual lathes, mills and other traditional machine tools
  • Machining parts and components accurately to technical specifications
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Preparing components for machining, including cleaning and masking where required
  • Inspecting finished components to ensure they meet required tolerances and quality standards
  • Recording completed work, process parameters, materials and inspection results
  • Identifying and troubleshooting machining or equipment issues
  • Working closely with the wider workshop team to ensure projects are completed efficiently and on time
  • Following all relevant health, safety and quality procedures
  • Supporting continuous improvement across workshop processes
What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced, hands-on machinist with a strong understanding of traditional/manual machining.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Previous horizontal boring experience - this is particularly important for the role
  • Experience operating manual machinery such as horizontal borers, lathes and/or mills
  • Previous experience within a machine shop, workshop or heavy engineering environment
  • The ability to confidently read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • A strong understanding of machining tolerances and quality requirements
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work
  • Good fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Relevant technical, vocational or metalworking qualifications would be beneficial
  • Marine, maritime or propulsion experience would be advantageous but is not essential
Salary & Benefits

In return, you’ll receive a competitive package including:

  • £35,000 - £40,000 salary
  • Monday to Friday day shifts
  • 25 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays
  • Excellent pension - 3% employee / 10% employer contribution
  • Private health insurance
  • Life assurance at 4x salary
  • Annual bonus of up to 8%
  • Salary sacrifice scheme
  • Long-term permanent opportunity within an established engineering environment

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Manual Machinist to join a skilled workshop where traditional machining expertise - particularly horizontal boring - is genuinely valued
