Managing Quantity Surveyor – Rail Depot

Salary: up to £65k + pkg
Location: Colchester

A major civil engineering contractor is looking for a Managing Quantity Surveyor to work on a new Rail Depot based near Colchester. The ideal candidate will need to have had experience within the railway sector as a Senior or Managing Quantity Surveyor previously.

The contract is an NEC Option A and the value is circa £40m.The depot consists of a wide variety of trades including groundworks, civils, building, fit out, railway systems and specialist equipment for train maintenance.

Role Description:

The project requires a Managing QS primarily for subcontractor/consultant procurement and management.

The candidate will eventually be commercially responsible for an entire section of the project, either:

  • Railway systems and civils

or

  • Maintenance building and fit out

The candidate should be able to demonstrate competence in the following areas, which will be questioned at interview:

  • Ability to lead and manage the procurement process on a project
  • Able to manage and control subcontract packages, manage change (cost and programme) through to final account
  • Technical knowledge and understanding of construction trades on a project of this type
  • A particular understanding and experience of either of the following is particularly desirable
    • Railway systems (signalling, OLE, p-way)
    • Mechanical, electrical, public health
  • Knowledge and application of all aspects of NEC design and build contracts
  • Commercial and financial reporting and control, including management accounts and earned value analysis

Professional membership: MRICS or MCInstCES
