Job summary

YTL Construction UK is seeking a Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead a growing commercial team across multiple projects valued up to £100m. You will drive cost control, reporting and commercial governance.

Join a large 60-strong QS/Estimator workforce, with responsibility for mentoring up to six staff and delivering robust financial insight for the capital delivery programme.

Qualifications

  • Experience in managing quantity surveying teams in the construction industry.
  • Prior exposure to NEC Suite of Contracts and professional services/EC contracts is preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication and presentation skills are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a team of Quantity Surveyors (up to six) and support staff.
  • Oversees commercial activities for the business unit, ensuring quality and commerciality.
  • Delivers regular commercial reports (order book, budget, CVR) to senior management.
  • Handles procurement, target/price setting, forecasting, contract changes, risk and payments.
  • Interacts with Construction Commercial team, Delivery Managers, Engineers and Estimators.

Job description

We are looking for a Managing Quantity Surveyor to join our growing and fast-paced Commercial team.

You'll join a team that consists of around 60 Quantity Surveyors and Estimators responsible for the commercial delivery of approximately £300m of projects annually within the AMP8 Capital Delivery area.

What you'll do

You’ll manage a team of Quantity Surveyors to deliver a programme of work valued at approximately £25 to £50 million per year.

Projects comprise process, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering works delivered under an NEC Options A/C and E across a portfolio of projects in the treatment programme valued from £10m to £100m.

As the Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will provide commercial management and the provision of suitable and accurate reporting of all commercial information required by the Construction Management team and other parts of the company.

You’ll ensure all commercial activities are completed in accordance with the relevant group procedures and governance.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • managing a team of up to six Quantity Surveyors, including trainee degree apprentices and commercial admin, where appropriate
  • controlling all commercial activities for the business unit (including ensuring quality and commerciality)
  • managing and presenting regular business unit commercial reports for the capital delivery programme, such as order book/budget, monthly programme ‘CVR' reports and contractor liaison meetings to ensure the business unit provides accurate cost, liability and forecasting information
  • managing contract procurement, target/price setting, forecasting/reporting, contract change, opportunity and risk, payments and final accounts, while also providing support to the Estimating team in the decision-making process
  • commercially managing the supply chain (including any consultants and contractors) to deliver the designated portfolio.
  • providing commercial interface with the rest of the Construction Commercial team, Delivery Managers, Project Managers, Designers, Engineers and Estimators, as well as attending regular financial meetings with senior YTLC staff
  • working to strict financial targets and deadlines, understanding major programmes of work, and reacting to the demands of construction delivery to ensure best value for the company
  • resource planning for Quantity Surveyors and the development of the team, including staff development, succession planning and recruitment
  • being actively involved in commercial strategies and initiatives which invariably cross multiple teams and departments.

The role covers our whole region, Bristol, Salisbury, Bournemouth, Bridgwater and everywhere in between.

What you'll need

You must have relevant quantity surveying and management experience in the construction industry; however, experience in water or other utility industries is not a prerequisite.

Additionally, you will:

  • preferably have experience in the NEC Suite of Contracts, including the Professional Services Contract and Engineering and Construction Contract Options A and C
  • preferably have experience in managing partnering arrangements
  • have excellent people, leadership, communication and presentation skills
  • have the ability to foster professional relations with others
  • be a team player
  • have a degree in quantity surveying or a similar construction-related qualification, or industry time experience
  • have a strong attention to detail, self-motivation, a problem-solving nature and a drive to succeed
  • be MRICS or equivalent qualified
  • have a full driving licence, as this position will require travel to construction sites.
