Job description

Managing Quantity SurveyorLondon | Water & Utilities | Civil Engineering

££85K + Package | Permanent | Rapid Progression to Commercial Manager

Hybrid Working

Are you an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor looking for your next step into senior commercial leadership?

Intersect Global is working with a major civil engineering contractor that is looking to appoint a Managing Quantity Surveyor to take commercial responsibility for a high-volume water infrastructure framework in London.

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Managing Quantity Surveyor, Senior Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager looking to develop their career, with a clear and realistic pathway to Commercial Manager.

The framework delivers essential water infrastructure works throughout London, with an annual value of approximately £70m and monthly turnover of around £1.5m.

The Role

You will take a lead role in the commercial management of a high-volume, low-value programme, managing a team and ensuring the commercial performance of the framework is maximised.

Individual works typically range from £2,500 to £50,000, creating a fast-paced commercial environment where strong financial controls, contract knowledge and effective team management are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the commercial management of a high-volume, low-value water infrastructure framework.

  • Manage and develop a team of commercial staff.

  • Take ownership of monthly CVRs, forecasting, cost/value reporting and commercial performance.

  • Monitor project performance and identify commercial risks and opportunities.

  • Maximise revenue and margin through effective contract management.

  • Manage applications, valuations, variations, compensation events and final accounts.

  • Interpret and administer contractual terms to protect the company's commercial position.

  • Work closely with operational teams to ensure commercial objectives are aligned with delivery.

  • Identify opportunities to improve commercial performance across the framework.

  • Provide commercial leadership and mentoring to the wider team.

  • Build strong relationships with the client and key stakeholders.

  • Develop an in‑depth understanding of the bespoke contract and use the terms effectively to maximise commercial opportunities.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor with strong commercial management experience gained within civil engineering, utilities or infrastructure.

Ideally, you will have:

  • Experience within water, utilities or civil engineering.

  • Experience managing high-volume, low-value works.

  • Strong CVR and commercial reporting capabilities.

  • Proven experience managing and developing a commercial team.

  • Strong understanding of NEC or other major construction contracts.

  • The ability to quickly understand and apply bespoke contractual terms.

  • A commercially astute approach with the confidence to identify and maximise opportunities.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • A degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management is desirable.

Experience of working under the exact contract is not essential. Strong contract knowledge from another major infrastructure or utilities environment will be considered, provided you have the commercial agility to quickly understand and apply new contractual terms.

Why Apply?

This is more than just another Managing Quantity Surveyor position.

You will be joining a major civil engineering contractor with a significant and established water framework, giving you the opportunity to take genuine ownership of a substantial commercial operation.

Most importantly, the business has a clear progression plan towards Commercial Manager, making this an ideal opportunity for an ambitious MQS who wants to take the next step in their career.

If you are an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor with strong CVR, contract management and team leadership experience, this could be an excellent opportunity to progress into commercial leadership.

Intersect Global is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion across the recruitment process. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates and believe that a diverse workforce creates stronger businesses and better outcomes.
