Job summary

Russell Taylor Group in Ellesmere Port is seeking an experienced Molten Salt Electrolysis Specialist to support development, optimisation and scale-up of high-temperature electrolysis processes in an industrial R&D environment. This role focuses on improving production efficiency, metal quality, and process reliability.

You will apply expertise in electrochemistry, molten-salt systems and process development to deliver scalable solutions for Nd, NdPr and related alloys.

Qualifications

• Industrial experience in aluminium electrolysis.
• Hands-on experience operating, developing or troubleshooting industrial molten-salt electrolysis cells.
• Strong knowledge of high-temperature electrochemistry and fluoride-based molten salts.
• Experience improving process stability, current efficiency and energy performance.
• Track record of problem-solving, process optimisation and scaling towards production.

Responsibilities

• Develop and optimise molten-salt electrolysis processes for rare-earth metals and alloys, including Nd, NdPr and DyFe.
• Investigate electrolyte chemistry, operating temperatures, impurities and process performance.
• Analyse process data to improve current efficiency, energy consumption and product quality.
• Lead experimental programmes, plant trials and root-cause investigations.
• Support equipment development, process controls and production scale-up.
• Transfer new technologies from pilot scale into industrial production.
• Work closely with R&D, engineering, production and maintenance teams.

We're looking for an experienced Molten Salt Electrolysis Specialist to support the development, optimisation and scale‑up of high‑temperature electrolysis processes within an industrial R&D environment on behalf of our expanding client based in Ellesmere Port.

This is an opportunity to apply your expertise in electrochemistry, molten‑salt systems and industrial process development to improve production efficiency, metal quality and process reliability.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and optimise molten‑salt electrolysis processes for rare‑earth metals and alloys, including Nd, NdPr and DyFe.
• Investigate electrolyte chemistry, operating temperatures, impurities and process performance.
• Analyse process data to improve current efficiency, energy consumption and product quality.
• Lead experimental programmes, plant trials and root‑cause investigations.
• Support equipment development, process controls and production scale‑up.
• Transfer new technologies from pilot scale into industrial production.

About You

You’ll ideally have a degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Process Engineering or a related discipline, alongside:

• Industrial experience in aluminium electrolysis.
• Hands‑on experience operating, developing or troubleshooting industrial molten‑salt electrolysis cells.
• Strong knowledge of high‑temperature electrochemistry and fluoride‑based molten salts.
• Experience improving process stability, current efficiency and energy performance.
• A track record of technical problem‑solving, process optimisation and scaling processes towards commercial production.

Experience in metallurgy, particularly Nd or NdPr production, and industrial R&D or equipment commissioning would be advantageous.
